Anyone know if arbitration agreements are part of the standard employment agreements? In the process of requesting personnel files to find out ... painful experience with HR.

I agree with @hjs also. Nothing in life is completely fair for everyone and it won't be in the future. Prepare yourself for life. Chevron didn't break any laws by laying off anyone nor ethical standards. There were people of all races, ages, and genders let go and just as many EOI's accepted. Get over yourselves. The severance package is generous and made even more generous this time for those "special" people who didn't have to put as much time in, with the 3 weeks/yr or service which was not as fair to older workers with more time in. Do you also think that you are entitled to health care and child care for the rest of your lives, completely paid for by others who actually work for a living? Nothing is free, as you likely know, and the world doesn't "owe" you a living.
Why is Chevron afraid of showing personnel file to employees? There are laws around how a company should manage personnel file. Degrading employees who ask to see personnel file will not change company’s obligations to comply with laws.
No, in a company the size of Chevron if your project ends they put you on another one. If they fire you it is because you are not wanted as opposed to not enough work. No WARN filings in 2015.
You must not be in very good touch with what happens in the company. There are layoffs almost every year. Yes, there not always big ROMs like renewal but it’s not uncommon to have layoffs here and there depending on the projects going on that year.
There were layoffs in 2015. They were done through the PDC process though.
There weren’t any layoffs in 2015 so you must have been fired for cause, thus no severance.
OP:
Ignore this monkey! He has no clue concerning your particular circumstance.
I was let go in 2015 for what what was outright discrimination. I knew it and they knew it and they tried to hide my personal file when I asked for it. I had some pretty good evidence against them and just decided to sue.
Because of the disclosure I ended up signing I can’t give you all the details of my case but I can tell you they had they not discriminated against me and for the amount they settled for they could have kept me around for the better part of a decade instead of the crummy 12 month severance they wanted me to quietly walk away with.
Some things are worth fighting for.
No truer words spoken, @hjs. I concur 100%.
Why do you need your personnel files at all? Were you at odds with people and irresponsible, a poor employee? Most people just go on to their next job in good standing. A Reduction of staff (layoffs) is not a firing and they really don't have to prove a bunch of stuff to you or for you. Get a clue. In any event if you feel that you cannot find another job because of something written about you in your personnel file then that's on you and only you, and sounds like a "personal" problem. Deal with it. Or I suppose you can go cry baby to some lawyer like a little child. It will cost you dearly, I can assure you and not just money-wise.
It is always good policy to check your personnel file before you leave. Even if you leave on great terms with rehire status.
Good luck with that. Even if they begrudgingly show you (or your lawyer) your personnel files, there's no guarantee whatsoever that they're complete or truthful. No one (including ombudsmen) who is paid by Chevron is on your side.
This is OP. Yes, they are required by law to show personnel files to us. When I send the request, they seem to be ignorant about what I am asking for. This is what I am dealing with.
If they are required by law to let you view them, why are they kept from you?
Go ahead and ask, but I’m telling you you’ll get a negative.
They are required by law to let inspect your personnel file. No exceptions.
I think they just won’t show you, especially if your left standing, They are to nervous of stuff that might cause litigation.
