Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Lay-off Conversation

How do you think you’ll respond to getting laid off and a scripted dialogue coming from your PL?

I think now that I know it’s happening, if I’m impacted, I’ll probably be stoic about it and really just try and not not be confrontational or angry (depending on the package and if we’ll get bonus).

I don’t plan on crying and going on camera.

What are your feelings?

I've been laid off once before. I'll probably handle it the same way if I am part of the lay off plans. End on a high note, and handle it with grace and dignity.

I'll thank my manager for the opporutnity, say I know it wasn't personal, and tell her that I'll take a lot from my Schwab experience.

I understand why others might handle it differently, but leaving on high note is the way I try to end things.

@ywc+1pjSGIHY true but not exactly, since a lot of level 57 are managers in name only. After the TD merger there has been a push to update the title system in which a lot of level 4 software devs and above get the title of “senior manager”. To make the matters even more confusing, some of the real “managers” haven’t changed their titles, so you end up with weird situations where senior managers get managed by a manager who gets managed by another senior manager.

@tme+1pjSGIHY Because the whole thing is motivated by cost cutting. BCG is pretty much clueless when it comes to who is important and has essential roles. Only thing they see and understand is cash. Most of these consultants are sociopathic 20ish year old Ivy Leaguers who use the thing as a springboard to greater things, and many of them end up being politicians. Now do you know why the country is screwed?

@buv+1pjSGIHY - I’m dyin. Why the EC decides to do layoffs and hire new people that will take 5 years to train.

The guy just joined and doesn’t know his job level. I’m now looking forward to the Monday phone call than to deal with these new Jabronis. LAWD.

The severance package is quite a lot of money for the company. To show your gratitude you are expected to impress the meeting hosts with a nice performance involving crying, hysteria, "how could you do this to me" rant, jump scares, they are all mandatory. Maybe add some Halloween touches here and there. Don't leave your hosts underwhelmed and unimpressed, it's just rude. :)

The person you’re talking to has likely been just as stressed. And possibly more disappointed they aren’t getting a buyout.

Camera or not, just say thank you and smile. You were looking for a job when you got this one.

And the next year is going to be worse. Much. A new CEO, reorgs, fewer managers, more denied WFH arrangements, a mountain of work that was deferred from the merger, cost cutting, another layoff round in Q1, smaller bonuses, backfilling lost coworkers.

The lucky 3,000 can enjoy the holidays and move forward next year. It’s those still on the island who should be mooning the camera.

@pck+1pjSGIHY Don’t worry lol. Associate workers are considered to be the best bang for the buck and they won’t get rid of you, at least not this round. They are targeting level 57 and up. Do a quick org chart lookup and you’ll find that they hired 60 new associate level workers just last week.

Ask them if they can write the severance on one of those giant Price is Right checks and then go to the Schwab cafe and have a coffee/cigar. Cause why not?

I’ve never been through something like this before (first “real job” outta college), but I honestly think I’ll be relieved either way. Being laid off can’t be nearly as bad as 3+ months of “is it going to happen to me?”

The way this was all handled is straight horsesh-t

I honestly will sigh...in pure relief. No one deserves to go through this stress and torture. While I would love to keep my job, I absolutely do not want to stick around for all the chaos and changes that will take place post-layoffs.
