I took another job back in 2021 and moved pre Covid my rent was 625 and by 2021 it was 975. Looks like rivian is even expanding also.
I moved to a hub where the rent became almost the same that living nowhere is no longer worth it.

@y2: It's not just me saying Rivian's growth is the primary driver of the local housing shortage. A simple search of the interwebs (give it a try some time) reveals numerous articles that state the same. I'm sure you'll choose not to believe these articles, even though Cities 92.9 is right wing radio. You will instead mutter something about liberals and illegals.

@xd well, the facts are that most of rivian workers were already local, so they wouldn't be ADDING to households.

And that doesn't count all the jobs created to support the workers in those factories. That is driving the local housing shortage. Please try dealing with facts instead of reactionary fantasies fed to you by the nighttime talking head goobers on your teevee.

You have convinced me. 20 million illegals doesn't have as much effect on the housing market as a few hundred people moving into the area because of a factory.
Supply and demand economic science that has been in effect for the past 400 years was somehow overridden by the past 4 years.
You could remove anyone residing in the US illegally from Bloomington-Normal and it would barely make a dent in rental rates and house prices. I guess it's a neat reactionary fantasy though, with convenient scapegoats.
The problem is that housing construction has not kept up with growth at Rivian. Our whiplash trade policies are not helping matters, either.
We've finally been able to have something for dinner other than beans and rice. We did move up to spaghetti, with sauce made from ketchup and cheap ground beef (well, I think it's ground beef - but it's definitely ground) . But it's worth it, because we've been able to splurge a bit -now our carpeting goes from the bathroom, all the way into the house. Thanks for asking!
