Walmart just announced plans to remove all human cashiers from stores and go fully self-checkout by the end of this year, Positively Osceala reports.

According to the country’s largest employer, the chain’s 10,000 stores will feature exclusively self-checkout and/or “Scan & Go” by the end of 2021. Wow–we wonder how this will impact its employees!

As we know, many retail and fast food chains accelerated their contactless payment technologies amid the coronavirus pandemic last year.

The retail juggernaut announced on its website that it was currently testing a store with 34 registers lining the edges of a wide-open store. The registers are equipped with a green light that alerts store associates to available checkout lines. The lanes will be open all the time. Wow–it does sound like it will move people through the checkout process faster!

The company asserts that the process will be manned by humans.

“At first glance, the new area may look like it’s just a bunch of self-checkout registers. But ask any associate, and they’ll tell you it’s a full-service checkout experience,” Matt Smith with corporate affairs said in a June 30th statement.

“It’s not just a self-checkout experience. It’s a manned checkout experience if you want. We’re able to move customers through a lot faster,” frontend team lead Matt Downing seconded.

Yes, the company asserts that all employees will transition to being “hosts” with the new checkout model, but we can’t help but wonder how not having an employee at each and every checkout could possibly NOT result in fewer jobs? For every guest that can checkout without the help of a host, aren’t they making a case for removing that position?

The Osceola paper visited 4 local Walmart store locations, and associates in 3 of the 4 stores confirmed that they were going cashier-less this year. This is wild!

This is false. We are in the middle of a remodel. We were originally scheduled to go to all self checks except 1 manned register. 2 weeks before remodel started, plans changed and we are keeping 10 manned registers as the company stated going all self check outs didn’t pan well in test stores.

We just remodeled and they decided to scale back on self checkouts. We kept 8 manned registers. I doubt they can fill half of them. I wish they went more self checkout. Floor associates tired of being called up front to check plus ask their other tasks. Nobody wants to be a cashier. If you don't want to check that use OPD, that's where all the payroll is at anyways.

The challenge for cashiers is its the worse job in the store and the pay and disrespect for this position is outrageous. They only recently received a raise for this position (just last week) from $11.00 to $12.00 an hour starting pay -- while a lot of their counterparts in other areas of the store were raised to $15.00 an hour over a year ago. They should have been the first on the list to receive this raise. Corporate knew they were removing a lot if these positions -- so, no rush. A lot of these folks will wind up at the front entrance checking receipts. Everyone is begging for help right now -- and at $15.00 an hour to start (i.e. Walgreens, CVS and quite a few others). I would say get out -- while the getting is still good.

Please explain to me why Walmart forces me to do my own checkout, yet there were no less than 11 associates standing around the self check area the other day, ,mostly just chatting with each other. And when I mentioned it to one who helped me with a gift card, she said two others were at lunch. I could see having a couple to help when something goes wrong at the checkout, but 11? wtf?

@xya What do you mean 'can't' hire cashiers. Your store may be the exception. All the Walmart's around me ONLY keep 2 POSs open at any given time. You have 2 choices: spend 45 minutes wasting your life to be checked out or you do it yourself and get out in 10 minutes.

I already know far too many people that refuse to shop at a Walmart. Double that when all the cashiers are gone. What are they going do doing the holiday season arrives and their losses are more than their sales? Self check out = free stuff!

It's not wild at all. I knew this was coming 10 years ago.

Its not a problem of losing jobs. Its that we cannot hire enough folks to be cashiers Unemployment is under 4% in our area. May as well go self check
