Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Outside the VSP window

It's incredibly frustrating that they gave us only 2 weeks. It's not enough time to line up another job!!!
Like many others, I've absolutely had it with GM and want to leave. I have several irons in the fire but now I'm reluctant to take any offers now that I know I'm out that VSP payment.
Has anyone asked for the VSP outside the 2 week window?
If so, what was the response from HR and your manager?

PS the reason I've had it: I'm one of the competent people in the 10% of the group that does all of the work while the rest does nothing. I'm tired of the stress of doing my job, plus being volunteered to save to day for others that suck (along with every side project the manager wants kudos for!). I know the managers know that they do this to people. It's absurd and abusive. They are going to be left with a lot of coffee cup carrying social club people who know/do NOTHING!

If anyone doesn’t realize that the severance was for the purpose of income while the looked for another job, they are stupid. People who took the VSP were smart. It’s not rocket science.

If you can't find a job in a few months let alone a year because no one will hire you, you should just go work at McDonald's.

The VSP was a sweet deal. Looking back I wish I took it.

A lot of people who took the VSP aren't leaving until the end of June.

That's months of still being employed while you job hunt.

You have up to a year's worth of pay to live on while you find another job, but if you start job hunting now you might find another job in just a few weeks.

Then you'll have a paycheck coming in, no gap in your resume, and the year's pay is pure gravy.

It all depends on your job hunting skills.

"Are you stupid?"
Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?
Most educated people know that they will need to explain gaps on their resume. If you are working, you have leverage during negotiations. If you are out of work, you often recieve less pay and benefits. It's sad that you are ignorant of this yet have the audacity to talk like this.

"The severance money was the time to look for another job."
With lanuage skills like this, I'm wondering if you are on cyclical welfare or which McDonalds you work at. If you are a salaried GM employee...wow. SMH

I hear you. If there was more time to line up another job might have taken the VSP as well. Probably just going to stay put for now though. Imo there may be rough economic waters ahead (why else are so many companies cutting heads and cost?) and if you’re brand new at a place in those conditions you might also be the first to be let go in tough times too. Just my $0.02
