Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Terminal cancer patient and fired!

GM will go down as the most inhumane employer ever. They just fired me after they knew I am going through terminal stage of cancer. I know my family will never own a GM again. I recommend people boycott GM products!

Did you hire a lawyer ? It is illegal to fire someone with cancer, due to cancer. I think you may be protected for a year after using FMLA. The only person I know that sued the employee won. Did you sitdown with anyone at Social Security to discuss disabilty ? My Dr. approached me and asked if I would like them to fill out paperwork for Social Security disability. It would have been fast tracked. through SSA based on my diagnosis and compassionate allowance program. https://blog.ssa.gov/social-security-supports-people-battling-cancer/

Keep in mind that many 'terminal diagnosis' learn how to live with cancer as new dr-gs are being developed all the time. Good Luck to you.

This is why you should never discuss personal health issues with you manager or coworkers. They are not your friends or family.

This scares me because I am in remission from stage 4 cancer. I can't take the voluntary separation because I defintely need the medical benefits. I have gone through surgery and chemo twice while at GM and my managers have always been supportive. I'm sorry this happened to you.

If you want the severance, you have to sign away your right to sue to over over the separation. This includes benefits, for up to 6 months. You must decline severance, if you want to sue or go to the media. Can still go to law enforcement over their law-breaking.

I wish you well my friend. I know its not fun situation but please concentrate on your health and don't stress yourself too much. God will help in one way or another and you will find another job soon. Saying this, you should try "soursop tea bags" which you can find on Amazon which I heard it does wonders with cancer patients. Good luck.

I am so sorry. I was let go in 2009 from GM, and they laid off a guy with brain cancer right along with me. I am afraid you're not the only one. It is inhumane, but we should also have a government that cares about the health and well being of it's citizens a bit more instead of allowing the overly inflated expenses for medical we allow in this country.

Please go to Press! I would.
It will cost them at least 100000 unit of sale. It really would !
After readying this I WILL NEVER BUY a GM. Not even used.
I don't believe someone will write such thing for a joke.

Pay attention to company benefits like life insurance and pension. Make sure you get the COBRA and life insurance transferred to you so it does not get lost.
Understand the difference between passing on the job vs. being "retired" from the company. And focus on getting your affairs in order for your family.

Wait because you have term cancer you expected GM to keep you on their bankroll?

Sorry about your health issues. I highly doubt they fired you because of your medical condition.

I have informed my children of these experiences and they will NEVER work for GM!
I have owned GM vehicles in the past but not any more! Not buying from them ever. Goodbye GM.

Be strong .i know its hard .but you will find nice job. Who ever got laid off from gm are in better position else where. I dont know which area you work . If you are exposed to radar a lot and you have cancer in brain area . Then gm safety need to be blamed. Long range radar can penetrate your brain and can damage your cells.

A different direction on this thread. On this site GM workers say "I'll never own a GM". On the Ford sight they "don't buy Ford. I'll never own a Ford".

So what can we pull from this information? GM purchases Ford and forgoes the discount? Then the Ford employees are purchasing GM ?

If you're a "terminally ill" cancer patient, you likely aren't working anyways.
Sorry to hear about your outcome, but fu-k sakes you aren't working with a death sentence.
