I have been with Humana many years and honestly received a big kick in the gut while on phone with a member. Went through the transition from FCM to phc because we could not do our job/ no masters degree.. to this.. to be laid off. All I have faith in right now is God. Not Humana. I hope Bruce can live with himself and his $70 million. Knowing he laid off all these employees.

In the 1980's, many right wing politicians had embraced the idea that only deregulation and unfettered capitalism would create wealth, which would then trickle down to everyone.
After 1980, wealth stratified significantly. Between 1979 and 2008, the after-tax income of the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans grew 275 percent. By 2007, the top fifth of American earners made more than the other four-fifths combined.
Yes, the middle class is struggling to maintain the "American Dream."
Bruce is contractually required to get the best deal he can for the stockholders. That's why they pay him so much. Just like Walmart, Ford, KFC... All entities except Government and we all know how badly that's run. It's the Bruce's of this world that keep your 401K growing.... And I hate it.
Yes, as a previous poster said, this attack on the middle class has been prevalent since the 1980's, so if you have been in the workforce since then, you have witnessed it.
The issues with realignment, restructuring or reduction in force, whatever the term used, are by no means new (as previous poster). I have been in the workforce since the early 1990s in different industries and this happens all the time. It is a result of business. Yes, it's not fair to all of us it effects, but it is a reality of the changing healthcare industry and economics. It's not fair and it won't go away. I have been with other companies that have restructured as well and I was affected. I was in leadership and was a consistent performer each time. What is happening is keeping ahead of the business changes. My suggestion if you are not happy is to simply start looking for another job. Coaches see the negativity and it doesn't reflect well on the company. There are a lot of other options out there, but not all are in healthcare if you don't have the right credentials. Broaden your horizons and look outside health care. As a former hiring manager, I would always ask my candidates why they are leaving or have left their most recent position or ask them to identify one thing they found challenging with their last employer and coping mechanisms they used to deal with it, and if anyone stated anything negative at all about a former employer, they were automatically disqualified. A word of caution in interviews...do not say anything negative about a former employer. This will make your changes to land the job much more difficult.
Very well put, last poster. I worry for my children's futures.
I don't think he cares - he runs his business and the stock keeps going up. I am not trying to be mean here, I think he is required to put shareholders first and he's doing it.
The bigger question here is why do we as a society accept this concept (disregarding the worker and giving all TLC to the shareholder). As a society we'll face issues in future if we continue this way as we are destroying our middle class while enriching the shareholders who are primarily very wealthy.
I do not have anything against wealth, folks earned or inherited money and I respect that. All that I am saying here is that we we continue to erode rights and protection of the worker we will continue to undermine (from the economic standpoint) our middle class. This has been going on since the 1980s and it's accelerating recently.
The leaders of major corporations need to have a heart to heart with the Wall Street and to discuss this - if we continue with this 'shareholder first' mantra what kind of consequences we will be facing 5, 10 or 15 years from now.
I don't know, it's a hard one to solve but given how much folks were pissed during the last election (both the left and the right) I think we'll have a massive social unrest very soon - at that point no amount of #money or #gold will be enough to calm things down...
Just my two very humble and relatively uneducated cents...
I hate to hear this. Good luck everything will be okay.
