Heard that a Sr. Engineering Director was offered a Sr. Manager Role with higher salary. He seems to have declined. Expecting offers in some Eng groups to start rolling off after October 4th

At Broadcom titles don’t matter in a world where no matter what it is you’re making your salary, a nice bonus and a handsome stock vesting schedule.
I’m a nobody at Broadcom who came over from the CA Technologies acquisition and I’ve never seen so much money being thrown at me.
Like I said in a previous post .
Keep an open mind
If Sr,. Director gets demoted to Sr,. Mgr role, then what will happen to already existing vmware Sr,. Mgrs and Directors ?
Like sublime said best They’ll be selling oranges by the freeway
I remember the same from Pivotal... Directors were demoted to Senior Managers...even tough most of them were promoted after 1year again to Directors
Carbon Black were all downgraded when we joined VMW, we were told unofficially it is so they do not have to give us as much stock
@wfy+1oU9fMa8 BCRM does have Sr Manager roles
Titles rule and are transferable to new companies. To prospective employers taking a lower title is equivalent to a demotion. Declining an offer at a lower title can be a very wise move depending on the individual’s long term plans.
I would expect that titles would be 1-2 levels “lower” than VMware. VMware titles are inflated. I am a Director. Really a senior manager role TBH. I know a VP who was offered a Director role.
I used to care more about title. Now I can about good work environment, challenging work, great people to be around and pay - more than title.
"a first level manager with a team (not 3 or less),"
As I heard, all manager in BC will manage a much bigger team?
"Have heard" - of course you have.
AVGO don't have Snr Mgrs. Snr Director --> Manager is most likely. Same with SYMC
But overall comp will be larger with RSU by a significant factor
So you're going to have a job that pays more money but will decline the offer and walk away with nothing over a job title?
@eiy+1oU9fMa8 It's not a demotion. Aligning band titles is a normal activity in an acquisition. Did the person gain or lose layers? Almost certainly lost layers so that's hard to call a demotion.
There's so much title inflation inside VMW it might as well be a bank.
Management band titles inside BC are very flat. What was known as a Sr. Director inside VMW translates to either a manager or sr. manager inside BC. The difference being a manager is a first level manager with a team (not 3 or less), a sr. manager generally has multiple layers under them or is managing VERY senior individual contributors.
If you're one of the people managers to get an offer from BC and have questions, ask the HR person or who you'll be reporting to what the role entails. Business titles are completely different than band titles and are something you work out with your manager once you're inside the company. As long as you don't try to call yourself CEO, it's up for negotiation.
Demotion with 2 levels seems indeed what they are offering. I’ve been told an SVP already got an offer letter but did not know they’ve already started offering to levels below that. I certainly will decline an 2-level downgrade and tell hock to shove it.
If Sr,. Director gets demoted to Sr,. Mgr role, then what will happen to already existing vmware Sr,. Mgrs and Directors ?
If this is true, and I am very skeptical since there are hiring freezes between the two organizations, and the acquisition hasn't closed yet, then I am not surprised. If, this was an offer from another organization then being offered a level down from from the VMware tier is understandable. VMware inflate the job titles, and I can tell you now that a Director at VMware will almost certainly be considered a Sr. Manager at most other organizations.
Source: I was one of them.
If he has declined, does he get severance?
Old news BC have less management layers
