Supervisors deserve it

Many comments on hear to the tune of “supervisors knew what they were getting into” and “I wouldn’t agree to be a supervisor”

For the first comment do you think it is realistic for us all to agree to not accept supervisor roles? How exactly would things play out if we all did that? What about good people who recognize the system is flawed but try to do the best they can to be fair rather than say no and watch someone who doesn’t care or try to be as fair as possible take the role instead?

The second comment is telling as to me it indicates people understand it is pretty lame to blame supervisors for doing their best to fairly administer a flawed ranking system.

What the he-l? some lame supervisors coming here and twisting the argument into how hard it is for supervisors?

The argument here is how bad and low a person has to go to get such a role?

As a past supervisor, I can attest that I had to terribly do stupid and wasteful things, power point achievements out of nothing, meetings, meaningless safety and ergo discussions and a lot of ape kissing to become one of the so called leaders. It was then even more disgusting to see my supervisor colleagues and how management worked. I quit a long time ago. This is all before the layoff forced ranking etc. I can tell you anyone making to that role is a disgusting human and anyone keeping that job and that career track is even worse.

There is a tick box in Career Connect: career interest. Leadership role, Individual contributor, Both. If you were asked to become a Supervisor then you ticked the first or the third option. So you are not a victim

I know people who were promoted to supervisor and found themselves unsuited for the job. They were allowed to continue as individual contributors and are still doing good.
Especially given the turn that the company has taken in the last couple of years, anybody who accepts a supervisor position knows exactly in what kind of swamp they’re getting in. Even before It was a pretty dirty job, with fake forced ranking, so it’s difficult to have much compassion for them.

Please give it a rest. You accepted the job and you understood the role. You are not a victim you had a choice. You also understand that you are not going to change the system and if you don't like the job asked to be moved back to technical. Just stop with the noble and ethical thing.

I don't want to get all Howard Hughesie here, but if only ethical employees accepted Supervisory roles in EM - we'd be stuck with an LDS managerial monopoly.
Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but for that XOM stock sell-off a couple years ago, Piscatarians did it too. green Britain.

There is simply no way out of this quandary.
So let's just keep recruiting the occasional decent-grades 2nd-tier school engineers with the key Narcisso/A$$-kissing skills to fill out the management gap.
Separate from the actual Ethical Engineer types.
