How soon will they start replacing laid off people with cheaper workers? Fresh-from-college types who will work for a third of pay (but will also give a third - if even that much - of what the laid off employee gave in that position?) I'm guaranteeing you that people will start seeing their positions posted online within a couple a weeks at most. And yes, I'm bitter, but I think I have a good reason to be.

I can't wait until after the lay offs and the boomers are deciding if you are ready for your next grade promotion. Might be a few extra years. If you aren't replaced with yellow badges. Plenty of young low experience engineers.
Experienced folks are like coaches, a handful are very good and can’t be replaced, young guys are like players

I'm on the yong side of gen y. To all the youngsters here discriminating against the old and insinuating that they should get fired:
1- Remember you'll get old too. Another decade or two and you will be obsolete by your own logic. Better start saving aggressively for retirement right now since you won't even get the cushy retirement package the boomers are getting.
2- Also, the original post says "give a third" so stop whining about how hard you work. Working hard does not equate high output. If you think about it, we all aim to become more efficient with experience, and as we learn and grow. Otherwise, what's the point? It makes no sense to deny that more experienced people are generally more efficient for the same amount of time and effort.
Yes, we have a lot to bring to the table, but so does everyone else. This is the time to stick together, not to promote a Hunger Game type of culture where everyone loses.
Everyone should worry not just the experienced engineers. Seeing most of our new hire engineers start out at $80k plus with no experience makes them a target.

I don't say make me the CEO, but I would have been a better choice than a lawyer. They should actually make you the CEO for the bigger picture stuff and let us younger folks do more of the hard labor. I think this way everybody uses their skills more productively. The idea of brining lawyers and others eternal to aviation world as the CEOs and then pushing the senior people back to competing with younger engineers is why we are here...

Microsoft Office has been aroind probably longer than you have been alive. Old people have learned many technologies while the young know one version. They actually believe that nothing existed before they were born.
I know plenty of "old" folks (55+) who are slower with no energy, milking the system until retirement. No one is challenging them due to fear of age discrimination. On the flip side, young people bring a lot of energy (and not much experience for sure) but they make up for it by working twice as hard. So...
They invented one technology each, so the guy who invented jet engines has no idea about the guy who invented Microsoft office... as millennials we have to all of the technologies so we are better at cross technology work and hence make the work faster and more efficient

When I joined the dept, we had to put loads of pictures in slides to make a very important report... this process was done manually and always was given 1 week! A process that I changed to few seconds by writing a simple macro!
This was not a bs report, it is the bread and butter of vibration and has to be presented at review meetings at every level

Boomers as a generation were named the "me" generation because of their severe narcissism.
It's funny to see that nothing has changed and your parents were exactly correct, though I don't fully blame you. It is probably all the aerosolized lead your were breathing while in your developmental stages of life, giving you brain damage.
This also goes for the older gen-x ers too, cargo-cult boomers that get almost none of the systemic benefits that boomers carved out for their generation before pulling the ladder up behind themselves. So gen xers ape the actions of the boomers hoping that just maybe they too can reap the benefits without the effort.

Check the HR pay bands. P4 is a commonly attained grade that can make in that range. That’s a Staff Engineer who has been there for a while. It takes time, but you can get there before retirement, especially if you have an unusual skill set. Discipline Chiefs and Fellows can certainly make in that range as well, though those are higher grades.

Hey Zoomer-boomer-doomed I agree that many of the younger employees outwork many of the older ones. But save your money. You won’t be fortunate enough to stay as long as them. Employees are being labeled as obsolete at a younger and younger age all the time.
