Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Management layers need to be thinned out

There are just too many people in the way when things need to get done. Too many people who think they know what's best for the company and how things should be done but in reality are completely incompetent and are hindering the decision-making process. Don't even get me started on all the politics in those circles...

Wasn't the point of the lay offs 2 years ago to do exactly that: cut out much of middle management and reduce top management? How has that worked out? Much of "lower" class disappears, even more middle class created and on the top ... it's parties every day.
Who believes anything this company says anymore, ever?

Management layers are temporary placeholders for chosen individuals to get exposure without knowledge or accountability.

Management layers do not exist to get the work done, just there to take credit for the work that does get done.

Your job is to get the work done (50%) and to explain to management what you did (50%).

Peon, you will be trimmed long before the cake eaters will.

Management should have been trimmed years ago. Pre Covid. Still to top heavy. We need workers / grinders to get it done efficiently. Too many PhDers.

“Management layers need to be thinned out”

This.

Management at EM (and frankly in every company of any size) is hugely bloated, massively redundant, and entirely parasitic. Management does nothing except for steal time/productivity from contributors and enforce regressive corporate policies.

Put senior contributors who are subject matter experts in charge of their teams and have them report those at the director level. Flatten the organization. Productivity will go up, costs will go down, and nobody will miss the middleman.

@Middle Managers: take a look at who was targeted in the tech sector layoffs (hint: it wasn’t the devs/engineers). Coming soon to an O&G super-major near you. Better dust off that CV and learn some actual skills, because you’ll be applying for new job soon, and nobody is going to looking for prickish middle-managers.

I’m in EMIT in the US, and with the race to the bottom for everything IT here, I’m afraid @ved+1la1VokB is correct. Have been actively looking for an exit for months.

@jxb+1la1VokB is spot on.

@ved+1la1VokB goes first. He's the type that got us into this situation.

@ved+1la1VokB You sound exactly like some of the managers that need to be cut!

Yes, they need to cut 30% of the jobs above CL 28. Keep more low paid people and reduce opportunities for promotion. Migrate more jobs to low cost countries. Cut Opex dramatically. Most of controllers, procurement and IT can move to India
