Cut Employees Who Don’t Have Four-Year Degrees First

To increase the overall value of AT&T after all the layoffs and re-orgs, one of the best moves they could make is to cut anyone who does not have a real four-year degree minimally, not even an equivalent too, like working years’ experience. If you do not possess a real four-year degree from an accredited college or university, then you’re out. Maybe this is already a part of the calculations in HR for determining who gets a surplus letter. There are too many middle and upper level managers who do not have a degree, not to mention many that are highly educated. It’s far worse in the Level 1 & 2, namely Level 2’s, the biggest bloated segment throughout the company with employees who have not obtained a degree when faced with ample years and tuition reimbursement to acquire one.

This post is somewhat funny. It appears the OP is goading those who do not have a four-year degree, exposing their fears as being found out as an imposter. Hence why all the nasty typical responses and comebacks from mostly people who do not have degree showing off their ‘chip on their shoulder’ towards those who may. Sadly, the fact is, there are lots of companies that do use educational status to thin out when things get tough. Often the reason given, they went through the time, and expense to prove themselves, and went the extra mile, as opposed to those who did not. Being smarter, better, more of a producer doesn’t really factor in. It’s also a well know that in general someone who has a degree is paid more than someone who does have one. Why do you think it’s a question on any application? So, there is an investment there that creates more staying power to the one with that “almighty piece of paper”. In addition, a company that is loaded up with more degreed professionals is considered more valuable than a company full on non-degreed employees, like it or not. I’m personally not a believer that anyone who does not have a degree, doing the same exact job as some who does is actually doing a better job than the degreed person. Though I’m certain, as I’ve seen it, cases where it’s very true, but not more often than not.

"Some of these old people with masters degrees obtained them before we had computers and the internet. What good is a masters degree from 1977?"

Ok snowflake, in 1997 there were computers and there was an internet, it's called ARPANET.

You do know those old guys at AT&T invented UNIX and C ?

I think you need to get a degree in people who are successful without a degree. I hope you pass. Just to help along use Steve Jobs. LOL

I would bet OP has a degree and is posting as a self-serving suggestion. There are probably others without degrees that are better performers that OP is worried may have a better chance of staying.

You do know your degree doesn't matter? You can have more than one PhD, and I knew someone who does that was let go. And we are talking science PhDs. Lett alone MS and BS degrees.

As my Grandpa always said, "Just cause a dog has papers, doesn't mean he knows how to tree a squirrel"

I know several people in management that do not have degrees that are so much more valuable employees than some of the newer hires out of college with papers....

Really just sounds like you’re bitter about coworkers without degrees being better at their jobs than you.

As someone WITH a degree, I completely disagree. Some of the smartest people I know and work with don't have degrees.

A college degree doesn't make you any more qualified for management than a nanodegree.
The ability to solve problems and get people to do what you need them to do is vastly superior.

I've heard for years that positions in ATO require a college degree for hiring consideration. Obviously that's baloney, majority of people have nothing more than HS diploma or GED.
