Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Rumor: Ford to enact an RTO full-time mandate (even for remote workers) ahead of a layoff next year

RTO will be full-time (5 days a week in office). If you aren't in SE Michigan you will be required to relocate.

The result of this will determine the size of the layoff at end of 1st quarter beginning of 2nd quarter of next year.

Note: This closely mirrors what GM did last year ahead of their layoffs this week. Mandate an RTO. Drive attrition. Then use a layoff to get to targeted numbers.

This limits the cost to the company in severance and job placement costs.

UnSE will require all its workforce to work on-site (ATNPC. PDC, AEC, etc.) 6 hours on Saturdays to compensate for missing hours during the week while WFH. All his Chief Engineers at the staff meeting agreed with Director's idea. As usual, UnSE will show that they go above and beyond VP Chucky Cheese and WHQ HR requested (5 days a week on-site).
LL2 mentioned his experience in the early 90's when he started working for ATO and everybody worked every Saturday. He thinks that it will improve morale and productivity from all UnSE Engineers. He is a candidate to replace Chucky Cheese
Go figure

The upper management should be required to relocate to Deasrborn and stop flying home on the company money every weekend.

And where will they put us? The Dearborn Campus Transformation (phase 1) will not be complete until the end of 2025. I guess I will plunk myself into the tunnel.

Good! Everyone at Ford should be in the office or plant at least five days a week. They should also be working 10 hours per day for 8 hours of pay.

This would be a totally non-sensical move. People that are classified as remote cannot realistically comply. No one is going to relocate for a job at Ford (There is no way I would). But some may? If they do this it wouldn't make any sense. But as we all know that doesn't mean in the slightest that they will not do it :) If it happens, then the decision will be an easy one for most remote workers. Ford is not a sought after employer at the level I think they'd like to be.

I wrote this months ago when our LL4 told us that was the plan. Soft RTO in March and then full (5 day) coming in early 2025. In large part, the phase was because they didn't have enough space in March to have everyone in full time, but after the resource review is complete (which is suppose to be done now) they expect to have a solid number.

I don't buy that they actually want to use the RTO to get people to quit, although it will happen. I'm sure they would rather just weed out low performers and hope the good people just agree to come in. I'm not happy to go back, but I have to accept the new reality that our dream of working from home is just not really be adopted by many companies.
