GF will never be acquired as long as the majority stakeholder is Abu Dhabi. GF will be scrapped for the tooling only. Just like an old car is worth more for the parts than whole.

In terms of gaining experience recommend TSMC or Samsung- but mostly for younger people with families willing to be flexible. Based upon interviews so far they are very impressive, it's almost refreshing to talk to multiple levels of management who know what to do. Big thing to get used to is that very strict boundaries defined but the advantage is very clear responsibility. None of this BS where engineers from one team fight with other teams and managers / directors either don't know or don't care enough to resolve inter department issues.

In long run Samsung , Intel and TSMC will absorb most of us in GF. Let us hope one of them buy us before we close down.

Arizona alone is a dealbreaker. NC or future developments in Ohio and Syracuse are much more palatable for climate.

I had an offer from TSMC earlier this year, but declined. I posted my experience here with others, but maybe things have changed

  1. The total compensation was close enough (within 5%) to GF to make a potential move less appealing. Their bonus system is different, and no stock options for US-based employees
  2. Cost of living is higher when comparing standards apples to apples. For people with kids - the education system in Arizona is gutted. You need to live in a good zip code which will cost you lots. This has gotten worse with the exodus from California. There are other cost of living considerations like cooling and water you should consider. I found food and health care to be cheaper.
  3. Lots of brain fry/rot, maybe from the heat idk. Political climate was a minor consideration.
  4. You are locked down when on site in certain areas/positions. No outside contact except for phone due to security
  5. You answer to HQ in Taiwan. So think of how Bangalore, Dresden and Singapore accommodate Malta hours, then flip that and consider Phoenix accommodating Taiwanese hours (7-9pm meetings). The hiring manager seemed amenable to modified shifts to start, though.
  6. I want to establish roots somewhere, and the climate/water situation had me .

Of course I might be able to stomach any of those negatives if I'm out of work. There were some positives. One of the interviewers had a way of explaining things very clear and concisely in spite of the language barrier. Their consideration to different things actually surprised me. The relocation assistance was also decent, but not trued up for taxes (not enough to list as a negative, though).

Haha, just try and unionize an Asian company and see what happens.

Now this is welcome news. Unlike GF, TSMC is looking to the future. I could see myself heading West.
