Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

Think I’m being “managed out”.

Pivoting to India for cheap labour my team is almost entirely India based now so I’m now feeling somewhat marginalised. There is a presentation shortly and in our team org chart line manager deliberately left me out of the chart, saying that as this was an Indian centric presentation I didn’t need to be included. Yet at other times they talk about our team being “global”. This was all done on a team call yesterday.

I felt, honestly, incredibly disrespected by this, especially as they made a point of including SD based management in the chart.

I’m considering speaking to HR about this. But I’m feeling that this might make things worse. Never encountered such shoddy, tone deaf, line management at Illumina previously.

@rv : because of the spelling of “labour” in the original post. Would never be someone from the US.

why are people assuming UK? Also this move to cheap labour in India ..how cheap anyway are we speaking? Software Engg salaries in India are ~ Half of US these days..so pretty comparable or often higher than UK salaries, AFAIK. Unless you are hiring WITCH tier engg..which is pretty shameful.

HR will not help. A report will lead to retaliation. The UK has labour regulations to protect you. I’d look to leave.

@ed ignore this. Yes HR are not there to protect you, but - you do have to do the process and play the game. If you have never registered your issues it is much harder to then claim they exist. HR are not on your side but if they know there are issues they will be hyper aware that that can escalate.

@ct 😅

Don't think you are already out! This happening is very common. Approaching HR? Forget it.
They knew this is coming and dont expect any help from them.

I would absolutely document and take to HR. Your manager knew what he was doing.

Not sure of your specific case of course, but I wonder if it may just be an unintended effect of the manager’s honest reasoning regarding the org chart. Sometimes if you’re feeling vulnerable your sensitivity to slights, real or perceived, can be disproportionate.

I’d suggest speaking politely but frankly with your manager or other trusted senior person. It may turn out that you misinterpreted the situation. If it’s really the case that you’re not wanted, best to use this period to find somewhere else.

Yes document every event that feels discriminating or close to co structure dismissal.
You might want to register to a union (eg. Prospect) who can help, guide and support you in case it goes pear shape. They can give legal advice, sometimes even join you for a difficult meetings with HR. You need to join quickly as the monthly fee is low but they support you under the monthly payment if you are already a member of the union when the problems start. Otherwise you need to pay additional fees.
Good luck, hang on and try to find people to share with for moral support.

Make notes
Go to HR
If it goes pear shaped you might want to think about constructive dismissal https://www.acas.org.uk/dismissals/constructive-dismissal
