Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Increased security presence on campus

Has anyone else noticed a significant ramp up in security presence on the maplewood campus or is it just me?

Woulda been nice to have this much security when all the catalytic converters were getting stolen.

Has there been a ramp up of security at other locations?

Yes, that is why there are concrete barriers to the entrances to all the buildings. One way in, one way out. When there is a medical emergency, it now takes longer because the ambulances went in the wrong way (because the barrier isn't at the street entrance) and has to back out and go a different direction.

It's about time some security was added, if even to protect the bosses from a crazed layoff. It's not comfortable walking the parking lot at night because you had to come in late and work on site as an essential (but not paid more) employee.

The parking lots used to be safe 24/7.

With 3Ms archiac IT capabilities and current financial constraints, I really doubt that they have the capability to snoop on a large number of employees.

It takes a lot of resources to do something like that.......imho.

Security is more visible on campus....

With massive layoffs and unhappy employees security has been tightened for concerned upper management...just my 2 cents.

The 3M parking lots have been a safety concern even before the floyd protests. Easy on and off the highway. I have friends who work at other major employers in other cities. Their corporate HQ are very locked down. You can't even access before getting through a well guarded gate with ID. No chance people could come in a steal a catalytic convertor.

You’re asking a lot of good questions, but do you really believe TTS is going to validate anything? I don’t really think they can share whether or not we’re being monitored…

Yep you’re right only certain employee populations would be monitored…Like remote workers, certain employee types, etc. so you might not be monitored but that doesn’t mean others are not.

How do they know which screen to snip if you have multiple monitors? Do they snip all of them?

What was the tip-off that screenshots are being taken? If they go through work of hiding the monitoring program I really doubt the screenshot aspect would even be visible

Although such programs exist, I have me doubts if it’s being used to snap Desktop Screenshot every so often. I mean a guy who works on production line for 8 hrs is not going to have movement on desktop, although his pc is switched on. Who is vetting the data out. I could be wrong, but would want to hear other opinions specially any one from TTS.

The IT admin has the ability to manage your system settings so as to hide the monitoring program. If the program is running in stealth mode, it won’t appear in the Task Manager or the list of installed programs. Of course, there are country rules and regulations that don’t allow for this type of monitoring outside the US.

Am I the only one who was worried about being mugged in the parking lot after sundown (3M hasn't cared about replacing burned out lights for a few years now)?

After the george floyd protests, people had to park near each other and walk to their cars as a group in case someone was ready to carjack them.

At least the essential folks can count of security until the layoffs are over (this round, see you again in July for 2023 round 3).

What spyware is installed? I'm remote and looking through the installed programs. Not seeing anything that would indicate it's a monitoring software

You are correct, 3M is not taking a picture through the WebCam. They are actually taking a pic of your desktop. If you’re one of those individuals that puts your PowerPoint on presentation mode, which prevents your computer from going to sleep, spyware is taking a picture of your desktop and if the same slide is open for several hours, it’s going to be a problem…

Also possible, that they are afraid of a disgruntled, laid off employee showing up...

Not sure I go along with "I'm Toast's" spyware accusation (respectfully). Reason is that my last lap top had a sliding cover that allowed me to block the camera. Also, for older models, most of my coworkers just put a piece of tape over it. Are there new policies in place that require a worker to unblock their camera lens? Or did you get hacked by someone outside of 3M?

Cat converters were stolen, Windows to vehicles smashed, even bullets went into the lobby of a building...but you're essential you need to keep coming in.
Security is a joke.

I'm toast,

I believe what you are saying is true. We are beginning to feel like Winston Smith of 1984 book fame (infamy). One has to wonder who is sitting in 220 right now creepily watching people in their homes. If they are looking for waste to cut, the monitoring team is a good place to start.

@im toast - are you fully remote, hybrid or mainly on campus?

Im on campus everyday because I can not do my job from home, although 75% of my job is work I cant do on the computer. makes me hope that the spyware isnt considered a metric for productivity for me…

Maybe I lucked out, but was there a time when cat converters were being stolen off cars in the Center parking lot?

Yes, I have noticed in building 220.

I’ve also noticed newly installed spy ware on my lap top as well. A new feature I’ve noticed when working from home, my laptop snaps a picture of me every 20 minutes. My software added to simulate mouse movements to keep my teams indicator green was removed, and not by me.
