Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Losing Talent

My team lost five high performing 3Mers in 9 months. The team only consisted of ten employees. We have a very toxic manager who feels it is okay to bully, belittle and berate the team. I plan on retiring as soon as I can.

This is not leadership. It seems if 3M continues on this path it has no future. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to join 3M now and anyone who can leave will leave.

On advice of council always keep separate and private documentation of harassment with dates and times of occurrence and a computer generated timestamp. If you either leave voluntarily or involuntary you will have memorialized the harassment securely. The documentation game can be played both ways.

This place is the Dilbert Principal on steroids! Promote the worst managers in order to move them far away from production. But now that 3M has laid off production, all that’s left is a room of cr---y managers.

To all you f*cking mo--ns leaving... get another job and don't quit. Collect that sweet, sweet double pay for a few months.

And before you say, "Hey that's not right!"

Is is right we sold knowingly defective ear plugs to the government? Is it OK we dumped forever chemicals into the ground across the globe? Is it OK Mike R. makes $16 million a year running a company into the ground?

I do my job, I do it well, but I have a few of them.

At the end of the day, how do you reward good work? With more work. So... just do work.

I would file a complaint with the EEOC if I were you.
Seems the worse they treat someone the higher they get promoted.
Sorry you're experiencing this.

I had a manager from a protected class wag her finger and give me the "come hither" gesture. I went into her office. I closed the door which she didn't expect. I then told her how disrectful she was and documented the entire incident on my home computer so 3M could never touch it.

I have an extremely toxic manager and have reported her to ethics.Com. What a joke! I had dates/times/ papers/ emails/texts/ etc and they found no proof of favoritism/harassment/coercion/stealing. Yes all of that. That person is still my manager. I can’t wait to retire but financially I can’t yet and I’m too old for other places!

I’m a white collar professional working in building 220. MBA and engineering degrees.

Since I have no immediate plans to retire, when I find the next good fit opportunity, My plan is to wait until my manager is on vacation and just gather my personal belongings, leave 3M property at my desk, and hand over my badge, cell phone, and lap top at the security guard when I leave.

I would have already accepted the offer, so no need to get references from colleagues or need to apply for cobra.

If you’re not retiring, there is no paperwork to complete in Workday ☺️

People don’t leave companies, they leave bad managers.

It is probably all planned, meaning that many employees must leave the company. We are in the begining of some huge industrial and social revolution where robotics and AI will be utilized on a very large scale. Wait until all the exported dollars come back to this country.

Another example of toxic leadership ( i.e. managership in 3M these days).

In the middle of the pandemic, a well respected high level scientist in the Corporate Labs with multiple decades of experience quit 3M in an unique way.

He waited till the last date of the month (it was a Friday) and simply quit by deciding to retire by completing the requisite steps in 3M Workday. Note that he did not inform his management team about this in any way. Only HR knew about his decision.

Imagine what happened when they found out!! Complete pandemonium and embarrassment all around.

Apparently this was done in protest against this guy's immediate manager and his / her policies. This clueless middle manager, who came to 3M from another failed US corporation, was a classic unqualified DEI candidate who was a complete disaster of a manager in 3M and was eventually canned from that position (much to the relief of the whole group).

The working theory was that thanks to the bold and unique gesture of the retired person, upper management finally took note and removed the middle manager from his / her role and put him / her in some " special projects" kind of role with zero direct reports.

Let’s be realistic, you’re high performers within 3M, which means you’re just ordinary Joes in any other company.

If you can spell your own name then you’re a high performer in 3M

One of the employees who left reported the manager but HR did not do anything. 😞 Good advice. Thanks. This manager also laid off the people she did not like.

I would immediately report this manager anonymously to Humorous 🤡 Resources!

That way, no black mark on your employee record.

By the way, is the manager a member of a protected class? If so, look internally for a new job.
