Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Broadcom isn't all bad.

An optimistic outlook:

  1. Financial stability: Broadcom is a financially stable company and the acquisition could provide VMware employees with a sense of security and stability, knowing that the company they work for is backed by a strong parent company.
  2. Increased resources: With Broadcom's resources and expertise, VMware employees will have access to new technologies, tools, and training that would not have been available to them otherwise.
  3. Career advancement: The acquisition may bring new opportunities for career advancement and growth for VMware employees. High attrition rates have been a concern for VMware in recent years, but those who remain may be seen as more dependable and open to new opportunities as a result of the Broadcom acquisition.
  4. Diversification: The acquisition could lead to diversification of VMware's product portfolio, which could create new opportunities for employees to work on different projects and technologies.
  5. Increased market reach: As a part of Broadcom, VMware employees may have access to a wider customer base, which could lead to more business opportunities and revenue growth.

But if I don’t have dinner with Hock, how can I truly learn the way of the dark side?

Thanks Hock

You don't need to have dinner with Hock for this. He openly shares the 'playbook' during the quarterly all-hands meeting. The man is very transparent and does not engage in corporate doublespeak at all. You may not agree with him but at least you know where he stands.

"@OP you forgot to mention the opportunity to have diner with Hock Tan and learn his playbook. I’m hanging around just for that."

An optimistic outlook: << by who? You? Good for you 😀

Financial stability: Broadcom is a financially stable company and the acquisition could provide VMware employees with a sense of security and stability, knowing that the company they work for is backed by a strong parent company. << Broadcom is a semiconductor company that just buys out outher firms for passive income from IPs and licensing fees. Financial stability does not equate to any compulsion to excel, innovate, diversify or even go to market with proficts that help you differentiate. Innovation is often stifled. When was the last time you ever heard of Broadcom actually ideating a product that takes pver the world?

Increased resources: With Broadcom's resources and expertise, VMware employees will have access to new technologies, tools, and training that would not have been available to them otherwise.<< err sorry you lost me there. Expertise in what exactly? Tools? Training? Really? So the good folks here created managed to lead Virtualization being poor, downtrodden, miserable and ofcourse coding on pieces of paper and pencils am guessing 🤣

Career advancement: The acquisition may bring new opportunities for career advancement and growth for VMware employees. High attrition rates have been a concern for VMware in recent years, but those who remain may be seen as more dependable and open to new opportunities as a result of the Broadcom acquisition. <<< but those who remain? You realise how ominious that sounds, right?

Diversification: The acquisition could lead to diversification of VMware's product portfolio, which could create new opportunities for employees to work on different projects and technologies.
Increased market reach: As a part of Broadcom, VMware employees may have access to a wider customer base, which could lead to more business opportunities and revenue growth. << Well “may have access to a wider customer base” just means it could very well go the orher way, correct? 🤣

Here is my take

  1. Whichever pompous a-s lickin b wrote this marvellous piece has clearly lost touch with reality and all semblance of what it takes to be called a human being in every sense of the word
  1. If, and I genuinely mean if, you truly believe in what you have written above, you need to revaluate your life expectancy, as it’s just a cruel, cruel world out here, mate. It’s a dog eat dog world. I’d watch my back and keep my ears open and eyes peeled, coz with an IQ and an EQ of that level, danger my friend, lurks at every corner 🤣
  1. Seek help. It’s never too late to reach out to your near and dear ones and ask for professional help. You need it

Adios! Stay blessed my dear dear friend. Stay as pure of mind and heart and never allow the cruel cruel world of making a mokery of your inner goodness and godliness. Onwards and upwards (literally) 🤣

That is probably a little over optimistic, but it has legs. I am not looking for other work (yet), here is why.

1- I've had a few peers leave already in anticipation of Broadcom. This gives me the opportunity to step it up and get more visibility in the company. I am already meeting some very strategic customers as a result of this. I am already getting to do better things. Good for me.
2- Senior executives leaving blah blah. How does that change my life in any way? Unless they say hey Mark, here is your severance (good TV show btw), then I don't give a #$@! Stop all this "Oh they must know something that we don't!" it's BS. They are SVPs and have better growth and prospects at that level in another larger company without Broadcom. I am not senior enough to be victim to any of that.
3- Be confident in your abilities. I am not worried in the slightest about job security. I have spent the past 12 months refreshing my certifications, expanding my professional network, and updating my resume. I am ready. Are you?
4- Broadcom has remote workers, just nowhere near the number VMware has. If you are in engineering for example, especially if you are near a Broadcom office then it is likely you will be hybrid. If you are in PSO, Sales, and other customer facing roles you will stay remote.
5- Let's say the worst happens and you end up another layoff statistic. Then I have to ask, why haven't you been preparing for this? You've had PLENTY of time to get your professional act together. Sure there are layoffs at Amazon, Google, Meta, and other places, but there are still plenty of opportunities out there.
6- Let's say the second worst thing happens. You have to work in an office! I get it, I don't want to commute everyday either. Initiate plan B!
7- Stop feeding your negative thoughts with toxic comments on here!

At the end of the day, stop worrying about what MIGHT happen and make the most of what you are doing NOW. Build your personal network, take certifications, do some training (I paid $2000 myself for a course, out of my own pocket), learn skills that potential employers are looking for.

Now go do LIFE and be the master of it!

That is a very funny perspective, one I don’t share at all. Nice try Broadcom HR troll.

access to new technologies, tools, and training that would not have been available to them otherwise.

Most of employees only care about two things: Job security and WFH. None of these are guaranteed by Broadcom
