Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Terrible atmosphere

While on the one hand there are many who are leaving, there are also many who are now trying in the worst possible ways to keep their jobs. I think there was never more backstabbing, taking credit for someone's work, gossiping and other toxic patterns of behavior here?

we had 120,000 at the merger in 1999, cutting 2000 per year... I expect 2000 per year till we are at 50,000 in 2027 (mostly asset sales) and bottom 10%

Speaking from experience, lots of rejecting work and keeping the seat warm - plenty of people who couldn’t give two f-cks anymore

The toxic culture is speading worldwide & not only in US. Every supervisor now advises to do more & doing your job is not enough.
People are taking so many initiatves under pressure that none is getting adequate attention. Problem is that these efforts are being taken under pressure and not a genuine one.
"We work hard & have fun" is a thing of past. There is no fun anymore. Its like a jungle and survival is everyone's first instinct. I guess we have to learn to enjoy in this jungle now and survive by hunting each other.
What an evolution for ExxonMobil!!

@yad It’s the same people whining about the same thing on every board for every O&G company.

The solution is always staring the person making the complaint square in the face:

Move on

It really is that simple, but the complainers turned it into some kind of a moral principle to remain in jobs they hate and weren’t all that great at to begin with.

The most irritating part is the sense of entitlement, as if these people are all owed something. The world doesn’t owe anyone sh^t. Get over yourselves.

Yes I have noticed this as well. We have a new group of employees from an oil field services company. They are terrible because they bring their bad work tactics with them. One of the youngsters said older exxon employees did not know what they were doing and that they were the best thing to happen to exxon. Pure trash from this company. This person wants all the older experienced workers to retire or get fired. This person personally was responsible for one employees pip and retirement in lui of pip. I am not impressed by this new group of employees. I have less than five years left of these a-s wholes.

If 50,000 is the target, then 13,000 will be let go.

@OP If you feel the way you say you do, and you haven’t moved on in the current job market, then chances are you’re not marketable outside of Exxon. Ergo, you should stop complaining to the internet about your job, because you’re getting what you’re worth, possibly a little more.

Remember the Psych 101 experiment. Calm mice become extremely aggressive when there are more mice in the cage than food.

Bottom line, we need to reduce headcount from the current 63,000 regular employees to approximately 50,000 employees by mid-2023.

We had 75,000 employees in December 2019.
