Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

What’s the pattern to the layoff?

Anyone have an idea of how the layoffs were decided? I can’t help but wonder how the decisions were made. I was among those on my team let go and we are all wondering “why us?”. Some of us agree it could be based on our tenure but even that doesn’t hold much weight after looking into the details more and more

The downside to being high performing is getting paid more, which makes you a target. It's hard to be excited about making more, just to worry about losing it...

My highest-performing direct report was laid off with no explanation of what metrics dictated that decision. It's infuriating and shocking how haphazard this all seems.

It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

He took care of his pals no matter their salaries combined reaching millions.
Did any of his direct reports go or his old friends? NO EVP or SVP of his
Some have no teams left - or their responsibilities shifted to the studios but they are still here with their high salaries.
People talk *** about CM - hes no better ...

Streaming Marketing + - no EVP and i dont know of any SVP even tho people have posted that some were laid off
Teams dissolved or left with one or two but a SVP and EVP still has a job to manage that

I assume you are not in PTech we lost 4 EVPs. 3 in August and 1 yesterday.

EVP saved their favorites and threw everyone else under the bus to go to CmC’s org. No EVPs were hit, like 2 SVPs only and then all the ones who do work were cut. They say it’s money but it’s about power until Skydance comes in. There’s also no one left to do any work only the bloated useless expensive folks.

In streaming it was the SVPs providing a plan that met the financial goals (seems to be based on a 30% cost reduction). So to do that they likely had to balance performance/cost and play a little puzzle game till it worked out to the total the Pepboys were asking for.

While age/race/location/gender biases exist, at the end of the day that was all probably trumped by. The SVP's wanting to still have a functioning group after hitting these targets.

Each org was given a target of $$ by the pep boys to hit. You looked at performance and also functions that would be least impactful. In many cases like mine I had neither and just had to let good people go to meet the target $$. Tenure had nothing to do with it but your comp did

  1. your manager or coworkers saw you as a threat
  2. your manager and/or coworkers envied you
  3. you were a complainer
  4. you raised the bar and had high work ethic

the layoffs were chosen by the SVP or EVP over you Mine basically admitted it
unless the whole team dissolved, they did a salary target plan and did the math
