Plant closures, engineering outsourcing, supplier cost cutting demands, H-1B Visa workers, program cuts, consolidated product lines, etc. have been going on for decades. It's suddenly a horror show because it's affecting IT workers. It's shocking how fragile they are.
Have they still been hiring people recently in AZ, even though they knew they were going to shut it down?
So they've been planning this for a long time.
I heard rumors of AZ closing down earlier this year and all managers shrugged it off as simply rumors. Not suprised, but it's still terrible to hear that it's true.
Remember to do everything you can to cash out recognition points, take PTOs, get your annual physical for HSA, etc. Start digging up old connections and apply anywhere and everywhere.
probably it will happen after UAW talks. Good luck.
I don't think you get paid for unused PTO.
Take the time off before the end.
check if they pay unused PTO. Long back, when Delphi auto laid us off, they had paid for unused pto
Next what? Austin?
Google is a great invention.
Here's an article anyone can read: https://news.yahoo.com/gm-cut-940-jobs-cease-221231708.html
Yep @alu this all to line their pockets
Can someone post the freep article, I am getting paywalled
Congratulations to GM CEO for successfully meeting the 2024 Cost saving targets by getting rid of these families. You secured your millions of dollars of bonus for 2024.
If the work is going to India and China, or even tata and wipro, you dont need to keep expensive innovation centers that will be empty.
The freep.com article says they're keeping the other innovation centers, but they have a history of lying.
How long do we think it'll be before they close the other ones?
The VSP was very generous, if you were allowed to apply.
Waiting for a better offer was probably not a good choice.
Yes, my husband was at that meeting, we have only been here for 2 years. We had NO indication, NO warning. We get 2 months of severance pay. After October. This is unreal. We for sure will never be working for GM again. So deceptive, we were promised so many times no layoffs.
I appreciate that they broke the news to us in person rather than in some conference call. From what I understand though, the severance package we're being given is roughly half of what the VSPs were earlier this year. I can't believe I stuck around for this...
Can you all document more on this and I'll start pinging journalists and folks who cover the industry - this is a huge thing
so @pgg - i havent seen a single downvote on this yet
this is 100% true, there should be now downvotes
Yes, it is indeed true. They shipped us all to a conference room at a resort to break the news. We have the rest of the day off.
Please make sure you cash out your recognition points. Get your wellness physical done. Use all of your vacation time.
Can anyone confirm if Arizona employees had a heads up this was coming?
This is the truth. Spoke to part of our team based in AZ. I am shocked.
Nothing like the offer to re-apply and relocate your life only to be possibly ISP’d in Q4
That is about 1000 positions, right?
Why is this being downvoted? The announcement was just made at 9am this morning.
