Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Management Call Out

Since HR su-ks at 3M and doesn't listen to employees. Without saying names post the location, title, and why they su-k so we can get some real changes to problems. I'm sure the board listens or gets feedback here.

$99.12 is today’s close (Mon Aug 21, 2023).

Very discouraging indeed.

$100.01 is a colossal failure by management at ALL levels and in ALL departments.

By the way, IBM’s CEO announced 8,000 layoffs and his intention to replace HR and the vast majority of support functions with AI. If successful, this sea change will become the blueprint for eliminating millions of worldwide jobs, fueled by the allure of massively reducing overhead expenses.

In turn, 70 to 80 percent of management positions will be wiped out.

• HR people seem to take the company's side in any interaction, never the employee's side.

• HR people seem to want to get employees in trouble for tiny infractions.

• HR people are not viewed as trustworthy, even though they say, "Tell me what's on your mind!"

• HR people stand idly by while incompetent and abusive supervisors get promoted and mistreat employees.

• HR people often "know HR" but don't know anything about the business they work for.

• HR people often spout policy instead of actively getting involved to remove roadblocks their employees face.

• HR people are seen as political and more concerned with their own place in the company's pecking order than with the welfare of the team.

• HR people talk more about policies, benefits and other announcements than they talk about culture, fear, trust, conflict or any of the million human issues that arise in every organization.

• HR people often have trouble seeing the "human side" of any issue, from a time-off request to a variation in a pay-grade or a hiring issue, focusing instead on keeping every process uniform and exception-free.

• HR people, who can be Ministers of Culture in their organizations, are too often seen as culture-killers instead!

Such negative impacts may include employee conflict, lack of recognition, inadequate training, and poor team building among other issues. Due to the lack of an effective HR management strategy, employees may feel that such negative situations will not improve.

The less diverse an organization is, the more likely [misconduct or unfairness] is to occur against the nondominant group," said Patty Wise, a partner with Toledo, Ohio-based Niehaus Wise & Kalas Ltd. and co-chair of the Society for Human Resource Management's Labor Relations Special Expertise Panel. "So, for instance, if the workplace is predominantly male, then women will be more likely to experience harassment. This is an even greater risk when significant power disparity exists between the two groups. Lower-level employees are particularly susceptible to harassment, and those in power may feel entitled to take advantage of those employees."

Cases of HR misconduct often go unreported and don’t grab media attention like the major incidents of corporate fraud such as the collapses of Enron and WorldCom. Those cases, unfortunately, reflect a pervasive pattern of corrupt corporate cultures. However, HR misconduct does occasionally grab the attention of the media, and when HR professionals act unethically, that misconduct can appear more egregious.

I believe in right and wrong. All 3M managers are culpable for the mess we are in. No exceptions. There are no points for failure. 3M managers made and continue make a plethora of mistakes, well beyond the norm. Past time for new managers.

People value businesses whose leaders:

  1. Tell the truth
  1. Treat their employees like human beings
  1. Charge a fair price
  1. Unequivocally stand by their product
  1. Demonstrate through actions concern for the environment

The difference between a good business and a bad business is that good businesses throw up one easy decision after another. The bad businesses throw up painful decisions time after time.

When I came to work here, I was excited for the opportunities to continue to advance my position or increase my knowledge and experience. While the company has given me opportunities to learn things I have aimed for in my career, I believe that I have gathered sufficient knowledge working with this firm. It is the right time for me to expand my skills at another company.

Hate to break it to you but the Board doesn’t come here. They don’t care about you. They are running their own businesses and spend 10 hrs a year on 3M. Im not sure u know how this works. Its time to put your adult pants on and get with the program. No amount of complaining about hr is going to result in any change. Even after , zozo the clown leaves, look at the layer or two below that … it’s pretty dire.

The plan is to wait until Roman’s 2024 mandatory retirement and ‘hope’ there is enough left to rebuild. Hope is not a tactic and Roman is not a leader.

3M’s support teams are substandard on a good day. There are far too many people in non-revenue generating positions, who openly hold “Sales” teams in contempt. They fail to realize that without sales they would not have a job. They need to be reminded who butters their bread and it’s not some black belt sitting in a corner office; it’s sales people.

I know a lot of employees which just accept to leave because they all got a burn out under the same manager. As they were not able to fight against the manager and just sign the papers to leave, nobody was interested in knowing why the fluctuation is so high. This person is still in pleace. I was close to a burn out and got out of this organisation in time.
I fully understand you.
I also know people which were taken over (as 3M bought new companies). As 3M wanted to get rid of these persons, HR changed the date of beginning at 3M (it should have been the first date in the previous company) to pay less compensation.

I belong to the SpinOff Team. We still have NOOOOOO information (what will happen with our contract, where is our office,...). This is very stressful. But nobody cares. New positions in the management are announced every day.

I had a stand up argument with an outside contractor. They falsely accused me of assult.HR dealt with it over a phone/video call. They read to me the code of ethics in such a way that they assumed i was guilty and seemed to stay neutral and protecting themselves. They wearnt interested in the truth they were interested in staying loyal to themselves and protecting there own interests.HR should be there to protect/help employees. If it wasnt for a senior local manager and a maintenance manager i would have be in a difficult place. I eventually went sick for stress for 4 weeks. If it wasnt for local managers standing up for me i doubt wether id be on this earth today. They saved a life that day because my mental health at that point was very poor. HR needs to go back to a local level where the person is on site and knows the persons personality and demeanor

Appointment of less skilled and junior employees in Global Lead roles and senior resources in the area made to report to juniors.
No process or project understanding but still running the show - will take 3M down the spiral faster- sigh!

Human resources will often field complaints by employees — but the actual response to the complaints may look like the company is only working to ensure its own legal compliance in a given situation and not to improve the employee's working conditions.

They penalize (with job elimination) people (some with decades of experience) for not being able to perform in a horrorshow performance culture that they developed and defended to the end. They hold only those they want to with accountability and let ride - sometimes - entire geographies that can continue to skate. They let stand in place, e.g., global portfolio roles and systems who have no ability to influence those who hold their performance in their hands. SIBG is the worst example of this. Just complete malfeasance and negligence.

Group firings via Zoom represent a disgraceful practice that numerous American companies use. There was a time when this treatment was considered “fringe.” In 2023, job elimination is no different than the onboarding process. Fact of life they say. A business decision they say. Then again outsourced HR teams have no skin in the game. No relationships with employees. They see us as a transaction in order to get paid.

Sickening!

HR should be ashamed of themselves for the behavior of their executive team. No empathy, no follow through, only care about covering their bases.

Outsourced HR resulting in persistent pay errors, with no transparency, recourse or solution. Below market pay. High attrition. No upward mobility. Disengaged management.

after 10 years of low pathetic pay rises and successive managers saying employees are well paid, the worker bees of Bangor, UK will be going on strike in August. Management have been ignorant and tone deaf to the plight of just how badly paid employees are who work with dangerous machinery and chemicals yet are paid the same as the local car park shopping trolley collector at the supermarket just down the road.

Whomever it is saw to it that a post describing the elimination of 12 people (no names were mentioned) was deleted within moments after being posted.

A bit jarring when someone has the temerity to publicly state they are “canceling” another person. Very harsh and unwarranted, but not unexpected in 2023 America. Pity.
