Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Excellent pay and benefits are no longer a draw

There was a time when XOM was able to attract the best and the brightest in the business because it offered the best pay and amazing benefits. Today, we've reached a point where around half of the employees are being underpaid and undervalued, and we mostly have to hire bottom-of-the-barrel candidates because they're the only ones who want to join with what is currently being offered. It's almost unfathomable what happened to this company.

OP DW and all of management all the way down to first level supervisors don't believe that knowledge and skills're a source of competitive advantage. Period. They believe that they can keep selling tomorrow today's products made with yesterday's technology. This'll work until our competitors find new ways of doing old things cheaper. All he-l will break loose at Exxon when that happens. But, DW's counting on that happening after he retires and milks this corporation dry. Developing the new stuff requires very well educated people and these people're expensive. Knowledge and skills aren't cheap. If it were for Darren he would hire the illegals coming through the border for two bucks an hour and no benefits. If one dies there're plenty more coming everyday. He doesn't care. he can't do this so he's hiring the cheapest people he can find and those are the employees in India. That's it. In his mind there's no reason to hire competent people.

It’s no longer a draw, yet you’re still there past when you should be retired.

There are two types of consulting companies. One consulting company tells you what you want to hear, and they continually get invited back to consult.

The other consulting company tells you what you NEED to hear and they never get invited back to consult.

Hopefully, our consulting companies are telling us what we NEED to hear.

Most of EM’s businesses are commodity businesses so top talent is not needed across the board. The issue is that EM painted all positions with the same brush and decided to cut pay and benefits so where the niche places that need top talent within EM can no longer attract top talent

The reward of working for the great DW is better than benefits and pay

Sounds like some top brass need to head out. The disconnect between the top outward is palatable!

That is the result of the brilliant “strategy” devised by some brilliant consulting firms and swallowed by the EM management who doesn't have a clue and no better idea : in a commodity market, you've got to be the lowest cost operator to survive. Full stop.
No need for high-end quality products, high-end technical expertise, innovation, blah-blah-blah.
EM is following the same route as Boeing, hopefully (knock on wood) not with the same consequences.

This is a feature, not a bug. Who needs world-class engineering to do the sort of business we want to do nowadays? If replicating yesteryear is good enough for the corporation, why pay to attract and retain top-notch talent?
Awaken to a glorified holding company ready to be stripped for parts
