Troubling Times- Hiring Freezes

We heard there was a call with the stores this week outlining a hiring freeze for many jobs in the stores, including managers and a lot of selling hourly positions, including some higher paid specialty ones. Anyone know about this ? Is this in the F50 and N75 stores also?

Our store is also a small store and we don't have a store manager. We only have three managers and they spend all of their time sitting in the office and we have several open jobs that have been frozen. The Captains are all running the place and we make just a little more per hour than the regular employees. We are opening and closing the building almost every day. The only time we see a manager anymore is when we go to the office to complete our compliance training. The company really needs to fill the open jobs if they want the store to run and be able to focus on customer service.

How are stores supposed to function if there are leader openings with this freeze. My store is missing 2 salaried managers and we are a very small store. Are Captains now running everything and expected to do the MBA jobs and the Specialized Manager jobs for our Captain pay?

@rt I’ve been with Macys for almost 12 years now & it sounds like we are in for one of the most challenging times at least that I can remember with all that info you mentioned.

@nv you do have a point, being a manager definitely isn’t an easy job but the point I was trying to get across was if you have more time than the person who is currently in the position you should have at least been considered. Grant you a manager is a very difficult job & it is but at least you should have been considered. That’s all I was trying to say.

Sounds a little like the 2008- 2009 layoffs.

Hiring freeze in response to current economic outlook and anticipation of a challenging fall season. Unlike a normal year when the company increases staffing going into the fall season, we will be delaying seasonal hiring until very late in the season with a plan for cuts in an already reduced staffing plan if sales trends continue to wane.

The company is currently looking at making all seasonal management and hourly position reductions which were supposed to happen through attrition, mandatory for the fall season with active cuts in any stores that are no to plan by the end of July. The company has not seen the needed reductions through attrition that were expected and the overages will not be funded going into fall. Store Managers are now taking action and starting to document low performers (or least favored managers), so that they have justification for fall terms.

Hold onto your hats, it's going to be a rough fall season with increased pressure on not just the F50 and N75 locations, but all stores as plans for presale, conversion, and survey results are elevated even higher. Store Manager's will learn about these changes when they go to NY.

In reference to the poster who said “a lot of us thought we could easily have done the position” referring to an open sales manager position in their store. Yes, you should be given a fair shot at an interview but to think you could easily do the position is plain crazy. Unless you have prior sales manager experience, there is nothing easy about it. The company and store managers are both continually layering additional responsibilities and demands on individuals in this role. The tasks are never ending and often times your sales manager is taking work home in an attempt to get caught up. Sales managers work endlessly in an attempt to be successful. Their efforts go unnoticed and compensation does not match qualifications and requirements.
To think you could easily do the job is laughable.

In my store my sales manager left last July & the position was never posted & me & my team didn’t have a sales manager for 9 months then all of a sudden they got a manager from another store to fill the position. Me & my team were surprised about this because a lot of us thought we easily could have done the position & we’ve been part of the company much longer than her according to context clues I got when she was speaking to me.

At our store our MBA retired. The position was posted and the SM conducted a few interviews. Then the SM hired our former SMM—teachers pet so no surprise. The SMM spot is currently frozen but oddly enough another person within the store has been elevated to that spot. No posting and no interviews. Several colleagues would love to have a fair shot at that spot and all have way more experience than the one who got placed there. Not the first time this has happened at this store. Most of us were hoping for someone from outside this store to come in because we just don’t have enough people working here. A fresh perspective would be nice as well.

We were told we can't fill our open Customer Experience Colleague position. That's higher paid than a generalist

This is not entirely true. For stores specialized jobs are not affected it’s just a pause on hourly generalist/support jobs until fall plans are finalized. Nothing about leaders and nothing about specialized jobs ie beauty big ticket jewelry etc. stores with 10% open jobs will continue to hire as normal and be reassessed week over week. Flex roles continue for everyone as normal to be able to hire for.
