Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Did they leave?

A few months ago there were so many threatening to quit over RTO. I wonder how many ended up quitting. No one in my group has quit. How is it in your group?
Now we are hearing about hiring freezes and mass layoffs. Going to be an interesting year.
Are you ready to go back?

I left the industry, too. I wanted to work on EVs but got nothing but politics and bullying at GM.

I did. I left for different industry. I left Q4 last year.

I'm hoping the complainers and those making threats make good on their promises and leave. It's not healthy for morale. We don't need people with bad attitudes sulking around, mucking things up.
I'm confident that the team members, leaders and management know who these people are and will target them during cuts.

Every day, big corporations are announcing 10-20% cuts. In this environment, people better get on board with team initiatives or find a job they will be happy at.

Not a single person in my group has left but I did notice that very few seem to be showing up to the office. Makes me wonder if the management will get angry and force us to work all week in retaliation. They say they aren’t tracking us but I believe they are.

Better to find a job where you are respected, regardless of WFH. I feel sorry for the next guy. Raj probably doesn't deserve the sort of treatment they're in for.

Image being so invisible that you can exist sight unseen. There’s a million guys named Rajesh that can and will replace you when the market tanks later this year. Enjoy your accolades. “Good morning. This is Raj. He’s going to shadow you this week.”

Still working remotely but my travel requests for quarterly trips to Tech center has not been approved yet. Having said that, already had 8 recognitions since the start of the year for work done while being remote. Was told of being efficient and fast as well as effective collaborator (It's one me, one team and win with integrity). So I don't know why people who just wants to hangout in the office to be seen as productive have issues with people who are actually very productive and focused while working remotely.

It's a moot point, GM's a joke regardless of whether or not you're in the office.

It’s funny that some people are still trying to negotiate the terms of employment!
GM signs your check and they say “get back to work on January 30.”
You have one week of virtual retirement left.
You can’t reason your way out of it, and the mass layoffs have already started at other companies. When people “quiet quit” to protest RTO, the dirty secret is that the management won’t capitulate. They’ll tell you no more working from home. “All hands on deck.” All performance metrics are being carefully examined. :)

So instead of doing chores, watching Netflix, and going to the grocery store during WFH they should be taking long walks, watching Youtube videos, and surfing Amazon while at the office? At least with WFH they can't count being at the office providing little value as work.

A lot of times the people doing the "hard job" of being harsh to their coworkers in the name of management's goals are just thugs for the man (whether or not they are actually a man.) In the end they cause more trouble than they're actual work is worth.

Some jobs require you to be in the office for specific reasons, otherwise, if objectives are not being met it is a failure of leadership.

Hopefully, both the company and the employee have come to realize WHEN? working from home is more productive, and WHEN? going into the office is more productive...

My last manager I had before retiring from GM INSISTED we report to the office, on a day in which the State of MI declared a state of emergency, due to the severely cold temperatures. Reporting into the office that day was a complete joke. No one else was there, as the other units in the open space had managers with some common sense.

I know that when the end product is a vehicle, in-the-office is a necessity. The designers/engineers/assemblers must touch the product produced by their inputs.

Back to the office should probably look like 2-3 times in a week, days vary depending upon the collaboration.

Let's take the extreme side of your argument for granted.

What is wrong with any of this as long as someone produces their deliverables?

GM pays people to deliver. Why do you care where they deliver from?

Some employees may be deciding on leaving for more reasons then physically returning to the office. The abrupt change to WA and how RTO is being handled is also driving employees away.

The real trolls are the people insisting in a fake reality where big daddy GM pays them to go grocery shopping, watch Netflix, do chores, etc. The fake reality where two weeks becomes three years, then ten and so on.
How long do these people think virtual retirement will last while car sales are down, inflation and interest rates high, and so on? My God, it’s time to man up and face reality.

You might think somebody's trolling with all these negative posts about people who like WFH but I think it's GM leadership. Typical "I'm right and if you don't like it find another job" way of management that is common at GM. If you have an opinion that doesn't match what what they were told they have to make you do, their ingrained response is to say you have a bad attitude and to do things that make your work life unbearable.

The goal post has been moved and we will see it moved again within days of receiving our bonuses. No one leaving but so many complaining.
If you are miserable, find another job!

We are cleaning out the drawers and work areas for January 30. Please check the schedule for your day. Two weeks until our mandatory return to the office! One team! So excited to collaborate with all of you once again.

Just over 2 weeks away…
I wonder how many people can still fit in their work clothes!
I’m not at all looking forward to getting up early and driving on those cold February mornings. But the party is over and soon we will feel lucky to have jobs.
