Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Bad job market

I’ve been trying to find other options ahead of reorg/layoffs/offshoring, and it’s bad out there. Five offers out of god knows how many resumes sent out, and all of them bad. Just one was worth considering, and it definitely wasn’t an improvement over what I have here. I have a versatile resume, updated skills, some valuable specializations/expertise, and still nothing.

Totally agree and finding the same. Media hasn’t reported the truth. It’s horrible out there right now

The reign of the petrotechs is coming to an end. There's only a handful of universities that cater to a petroleum-related program. Research as a career died a decade ago, and those good at it returned to academia. Exploration is a dead-end career now. Development (and I include tight gas/oil in that) is rapidly becoming saturated and is about as professionally satisfying as watching paint dry. @lem is looking for A&D people, but they have to have a good business background to fit in.

Being overpaid is a relative term. We are not overpaid compared to competitor Supermajor IOCs. It's in the ballpark.

If a petrotech does a calc for an EPC, supplier, or service company, that only does so much for the employer. If that similar calc is done for an IOC, the IOC can make multi-millions. Sure the IOC may pay the petrotech 30% more, but the IOC can make a ton more than 30% from the same type of petrotech work.

How out of touch lol. Most of us would ki-l for even 5 interviews right now, let alone 5 offers. Pi-s off.

(Jumped from Chevron a few years back). The Geo job market is stratified.

We've been trying to hire a good A&D geo for 6 months now. Anybody with good experience (Exploration, commercial deals, petrophys, etc.) is spoken for and very difficult to pry away.

Dev Geos. Yeah, they're a dime a dozen. Easy skills to acquire and don't need very many if you're willing to contract out the low value stuff (E.g. geosteering).

Hopefully something in there was helpful to the board.

The petroleum geology job market is terrible. Every time a geologist job gets posted on LinkedIn it quickly reaches over 100 applications. People better have back up plans for sure.

5 job offers is considered a bad job market? I hope the offers you received help you understand the market value of your skillset. Coming from elsewhere, I've realized people at Chevron don't realize how much of a silver spoon they've been fed with.

It’s also Q4 though and many companies slow down hiring at the end of the year. Hopefully things turn around and start opening up in January.

It is amazing how much grown people complain and do not realize how grossly overpaid they are.

You must’ve realized that you are grossly over paid for the work output
