More layoffs coming

It looks like more layoffs will soon be announced. Has anyone heard anything specific?

I was told by the VP of our local a month or two ago that the company had gotten in touch with the local about anticipated layoffs of outside techs by the end of year. That said it has been a while and not many months left in year ,
Note: This was in Washington state.

@OP "It looks like." People just make up cr-p like this to generate false buzz. You should be ashamed of yourself.

@mk We were told a few years ago how they planned to convert 2 million GPON customers to Quantum Fiber. They were pushing hard for this. Now we know why.

@n0

The last contract was the best since 1998. Not sure which part you thought was horse manure. The raise was the highest I can remember plus no give backs and medical didn’t go up. All in my opinion of course but I remember the contracts with no raises. The union is pathetic these days and will bend over for half a cigarette butt. Just remember it can and probably will get worse.

Fiber hasn't been sold yet. The deal wont close until next year.
Having a weak union will sc--w over union membership.

@mq Don’t know why you’re defending the company when you know so much history.

But the fact still remains that the company sold the union a load of horse manure during the last contract and has now sold mass markets and all their employees down the River!

Best of luck.. with your Shilling for Kate

Let’s end the p-e p-e contest so you two stfu.
https://ir.lumen.com/news/news-details/2023/Lumen-unleashes-ultra-fast-Quantum-Fiber-internet/default.aspx

It reads lumen unleashes quantum fiber in June 2023. In about 2020 they created the brand “quantum” but we’re not selling a quantum product.

In 2020 lumen had 715,000 fiber internet subscribers.
“AI Overview
In 2020, Lumen Technologies had 715,000 fiber subscribers. This represented a total of 2.5 million fiber-enabled households in their network, with 400,000 added in that year.”

Now it’s all called quantum internet by lumen. Maybe some contracts are still labeled gpon but unsure of that.

So there, you’re both kind of right and kind of wrong. Go pi-s in someone else’s cereal now instead of each others on this forum.

“They created an entirely organization with in the company added hundreds yes! Literally hundreds of fiber spicers across the company to national implementation ( aka construction) hired scores and scores of engineers.. .. It was hardly just a Usoc change”

Yep, very aware of all the useless jr engineers they hired out of the osp academy or the failed prem techs that couldn’t handle weather transferred over for 40k a year. (Most have quit or have been laid off) And I know the entire fiber splicing crew that was created 2 years ago. They had and have so little fiber splicing they are actually copper splicing on maintenance jobs. 35 fiber splicers and over half of them don’t have daily work.

“It's you that has no clue, maybe you don't work in the field. 10 years ago we had 0 gpon customers in my area. I'm sure there was select areas that did have gpon, and yes those were converted to Quantum but we have added a hundreds of thousands of Quantum customers via new fiber in the past 3 years.”

I should have been made aware that your area was the entire company. And yes, I started installing/repairing gpon service in 2016. That was about my 20th year with the company squirt. You must be a prem tech with a few years on the job that thinks everything is new since you got hired. And true, there has been “some” new fiber placed in the last 5 years. When you go out to install quantum now it may be 10 year old fiber or it may be 6 month old fiber. You won’t know the difference other than the programming and billing. I would bet my paycheck nearly half the customers that are quantum now were previous gpon customers. There hasn’t been 800,000 new quantum customers installed in the last 5 years kid.

@kv just in case you’ve forgotten.. ill remind you that the company stopped paying out Dividends in order to Fund the Quantum Build out!

"You have no clue is a correct statement. The fiber that was placed 10 years ago was called gpon. The same fiber that is called quantum now. I myself had gpon service. One day I got a letter and it said I will be switched to quantum. And just like that I was a quantum customer. No work was done other than billing and a name change. To say that 3 years ago there were only 200k ftth customers is a mo--nic statement"

Quantum was a name and billing change. The work was put in 10 years ago. And I don’t see any management still around that was part of it. At least not in my rca.

@gs
Very few anymore that I know of. Dispatch and design. Very few tech support left. Most of it has been shipped away.

@ge
There are other union employees that don't directly support fiber. You know. The office jobs.
But they don't support enterprise either.
Those employees are on the bubble.
And they will keep the contractors.

"They can still do union layoffs"
Net and broadband techs are probably safe for about 2 or 3 years. Itll take that long to sell off whats left of the copper or shut off whats left of it. Prem techs on the other hand may not make it through next summer.

They call it a RIF. It's too late in the year for a RIF now. Maybe around Thanksgiving time the next RIF will come. It's like swiss clock folks, always right on time. Does anyone working at Lumen actually like working at Lumen? Whatever scares people to find the next better job, it's not a bad thing. Move on, be happy.

Your layoff notices will come from the bank once your paycheck bounces!

All of a sudden your company cell and logins will stop working, your Id badge won’t get you in the building and a you’ll get a ups shipping slip and a letter in the mail asking you to please box up and return any company devices or materials!!

Next stop for the company is bankruptcy court, so that they can just let the creditors fight over the Legacy scraps, of what was Qwest and Centry tel,

You have to ask yourself why did they have under sell Quantum for 5.7 billion? .. if i was making money they could have just continued to build it up and eventually getting a better price and continued off setting the losses of copper services,

the crystal ball suggests that partial Bankruptcy has been part of the plan all along, Just as we now know that Lumen plan was to pump up the existing FTTH under the Quantum brand just so that they could sell it off,

Last 3 years a whole lot of union ( and some management) people here put a whole lot of effort and love in to Quantum trying to make better and more secure future for the company for the employees!

Kate just eluded to a fact in an interview that the Board brought her on board with the express goal of getting rid of mass markets, add that in with the fact of how she was hired immediately right after the last contract was ratified, a contract that was sold to us hand in hand with Quantum being the bright new secure future for Lumen and its employees…

Well we got hustled plain and simple.. Don’t trust a single thing that the company says, because no one who put the effort into Quantum is going to derive any benefit from it now.. short of the hourly wage they drew during its construction, no profit from it will ever go into growing the company or the pension funds!

Yes as usual for last 2 years they will occur end /start time of every quarter. Lumen has been also letting go people in small pockets to avoid needing a mass email or customers on the fence without already terrible customer service seeing Lumen lose even more people in what is barebones support levels.

Our CEO behavior and absence recently and having CFO be more present on calls also leads me to believe she is on way out.
