I read a similar article last week about the same topic. Something to always remember is that any raise you get within the same company is always working off the baseline salary you received when you were hired. The only way to make significant bumps in pay is to move around every so often. I know several people who work in IT, and never stay at the same place more than a few years at a time. Some have even moved to consulting because it's more money and less BS.
This whole layoff debacle has really lit the fire under my @$$ to start looking. I've spent the past year upskilling in as much as possible so I can be more competitive in the job market. It seems like we lag behind in tech skills if you're not directly in a data driven environment, so that's been my primary focus.
