Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

STS- Stay/Leave- counter?

The environment su-ks. Obviously.

I’m an SME for a very specialized niche product in STS, with over 15+ years experience. Honestly after all the talk of layoffs. Some of us feel that our group of onshore developers are safe- due to the nature of the product.

Not sure I believe that.

My question here- and I’ve never been so unsure of something.

As soon as RTO was announced I started putting my name out there. Applying. Etc. I had a few interviews. One offer. I verbally accepted and they are beginning the onboarding process.

This job is stable.

It’s about a 20% salary increase.

I think it’s best for my career if I take it. As “you never know”

My question is this - given the environment, what are the odds of a counter offer. I feel if that happened- I would be safe from “this round”

I like my team. A lot, and tbh I’m not looking forward to following new processes, etc.

None from my area. Just contractors contracts coming to an end and not rehiring for the roles.

Never ever take a counter offer. You put your name out there because you are not happy, if Schwab counters the underlying issues haven't gone away. Eventually the $$ won't matter and you'll be back in the same spot but with a huge target on your back.

In my experience, asking (and taking) a counter puts a target on your back. You are now expected to out-perform all the time to justify the increased cost. Also, you gotta do what's best for YOU. The company does not, and never will have your back. If I were in your position, I'd walk and not look back. Schwab made this bed, make them sleep in it.

If your team is small, vital to migration and already have had people leave, you would have an excellent chance of a counter offer.

The real question would be is it worth it to stay? A new company might have its own craziness, but its craziness you chose vs one forced upon you.

No chance. Schwab is blocking promotions and raises in STS right now.

They looking to cut cost. I’ve never seen schwab counteroffer in my area and some real good workers have left the company.

@knh+1nXRoQHt sounds like my former manager. May they never manage another soul in their lifetime, for the benefit of all humanity. Everybody brightens a room. Some when they enter, some when they leave.

It’s worth asking. I’ve successfully gotten a counter from Schwab before. That’s no guarantee they’ll keep you though. If they are planning to let you go, they might just think of it as a retention cost to keep you until then.

I’m in Ops and I can say that in my 15 years at Schwab I’ve never seen them counter anyone who is leaving. Unsure if that is different in other orgs.

Ask your manager - I personally would downlevel you if you were on my team or take an offshore resource and replace you, 100% odds.
