Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Campus feels like a ghost town, except in 223

Which feels both angry and sad. So many "leaders" walk around looking broken or arrogantly heartless. Just sell the campus to Hollywood so they can use the place to make zombie movies.

Totally agree but still call WYW unfair (this is my first post in this thread) as I am yet to see healthy discussion on which functions are suited for WYW and which ones are not or only partly. I am p’ed off with this blanket approach where every one decides what’s best for them without any consideration on their ability to perform their job properly.

Why so much complaining about WYW?

Most people (outside of the plants) love WYW.

Complaining that WYW is unfair because not everyone's job can be done remotely is childish. If it's an improvement for most, we shouldn't give it up in order to equally inconvenience everyone in the name of fairness.

WYW is so unfairly crafted for those regional roles. Especially directors and above. Imagine they are so well paid and yet get to work at the comfort of their home.

Function specific WYW…not blanket. I get that certain function are great for WYW, no debate. Next we gonna hear my doctor or surgeon is doing WYW, and you set up a Teams call to go through his excel and ppt.

Good that WYW going to stay. Frankly that's what keeping me at the job. It really allows flexibility to do my housework while taking calls, as well as afternoon naps. Well done 3M.

Rumor is they’ll be leasing out buildings of HQ in the near future. I agree, no way can they take away WYW when they’ve reconfigured so many areas to hot desks and need that lease cash flow.

For those in an office role who want WYW gone, it is too late, they are already closing many state sales branches, there is no choice but to work from home now for anyone who is not at HQ. The remaining country offices are being downsized too, with only hotdesks remaining, no more fixed seating.

Agree that WYW is ki-ling the ship here. Imagine plants letting production supervisors WFH. This is really a joke.

Productivity has gone to complete Sh!t in the manufacturing sites and plants because of "Work your Way" and the resentment it has created in the plants is measureable just like it was during Covid and the mandates. Dont give me the data driven, competitive, or choosing that lifestyle situation arguments, have heard the phony arguments from corporate and plant staff. There is so much disconnect and lack of caring, teamwork it is ridiculous at 3M. You might as well hire all contractors. Compound this with the layoffs, bu-t kissing,
They see the Supervisors leaving, the managers leaving early every Friday, the ghost town that are the offices and know people are just logged in on Iphones, very hard to mtivate staff when they see do much favortism and abuse. I know of two directors in SIBG that have not been in person to any offices in three years. I know of two supply chain people that were not remote staff that moved away over 600 to a thousand miles 10 months prior to finding remote positions elsewhere and there managers had no idea until after they left for other positions that they hadnt been to their sites in over nine months or were not adequately doing h
Jobs. Mike Roman can tout it all he wants, competitive advantage my bu-t, by all metrics and measurements it is failure. ALL this situation has done is created a company that is 100% divided. Of course those that benefit from it most, the cost savings, unlimited time off, and flexibility it affords live it and love it. There is so much abuse and lack of trust it is ridiculous. A lot of the management turn a blind eye because they benefit from lack of discipline or measuring tools to verify who is working. I visit sites and buildings on Friday's and Monday's complete ghost towns. If it is that way at multiple sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin it is that way everywhere across 3M. Who cares anyways, why even talk about it, 3M is a lost cause! Work No Way is a farce!

A decent amount of folks, especially in mfg, resent work your way. They sure as heck don’t have that flexibility, and they’re the ones that generate our product. It has also measurably reduced productivity including/especially growth.

At this point, I’d be just fine mandating 2-3 office days and losing whoever isn’t interested. Including/especially executives that are sitting in their $1MM cabin. At this point we’ve already been cut to the bone. Might as well get rid of some dead weight too. Feel free to find a remote job somewhere else… if you can.

Mandate 3 days a week office for all. WYW is stupid, when we should be all hands on deck to go full steam to save the sinking ship. If you are unhappy, then go and work for someone else who allows mid day nap, dog walking and gardening time…oh sorry wanted to say work–life balance.

So much truth to this, plus most of the CWs aren't even JLL employees. They bring in site manager, coordinator or two, maybe and maybe hire a couple former 3Mers who'd recently had their jobs eliminated to get the benefit of some knowledge transfer (and some very qualified people have been fortunate enough to make that switch). But most of their model is to sub out everything to JLL's own list of preferred suppliers. The JLL mgr will puff out his chest and talk about having "laser focus" on any reported problems and then try to make a point of dressing out the site lead of the subcontractor responsible for the work, but it's all for show.

WYW, appear online, mow lawn, attend a meeting or two, you can take your dog for a walk at the same time and be sure to pretend you still care. Time for lunch and a movie. We are doomed.

Regarding JLL, note that JLL does not attract the best employees but instead hire the most affordable. Many of their kitchen staff have been fired for theft at 3m center. For 12$ you can get a hotdog, but unfortunately there’s a good chance your catalytic converter is being removed while you eat. Service has never been worse or as expensive. And 3m is all in.

With the constant shuffling of EWS to different areas you can expect minimal investment in facilities upkeep as 3M continues to hand everything off to JLL. You'll get the occasional Yammer post or email about how 3M is "standardizing" the new workplace experience, but your BS detector should be going crazy.

Lights out? Restrooms not stocked? Malfunctioning lab equipment? Remember to submit your requests/complaints/questions via the FASHelp app. It will send an email to an underqualified CW who will immediately push buttons on their iPhone to make sure they're tracking a 95% response rate. Note that a "response" doesn't mean anything has been addressed, just that someone saw the request and electronically kicked it down the street. But B-b S will look great in his Tier review when he reports just how outstanding the metrics look. Don't ever underestimate the ability of a former MBB to make the numbers look far better than they are.

Wicked W_B is driving the IFM bus out of Maplewood and to every corner of the globe. Just moving all of the direct cost to an indirect cost model meaning 3M will pay more for less, but will get those pesky pensions and benefits off the books. It really is amazingly stupid when you think about it. 3M had world class support services, driven by dedicated employees committed to being part of a large, complex operation. SMEs in less than glamorous fields would travel and even relocate to other parts of the country and even globe to support the business needs. But the bean counters think they can get similar results with all contracted labor working in fields with incredibly high turnover rates. Welcome to "support yourself" 3M. The new model of inefficiency.

Being laid off, I am seeing numerous other companies offering similar remote/hybrid forms of employment. I do think it’s the wave of the future. Some may like it, some may not. I have been both a working & stay-at-home Mom. It’s very similar. Pluses and minuses on either side.
What I noticed when last on campus was the complete lack of maintenance/up keep compared to 2020. I agree, perfect zombie movie set-up! So now I’m questioning if WYW was a method to save 3M $?

WyW is bad and does not work for every function equally well. Fact is that lab based folks turning up 1–2 days to do experiments and rest of the days just don’t know doing what. Sad
MR should grow pair of gonads and call this expensive experiment off…if not for every one then for a few functions for sure.

Maybe 3M needs to provide a streaming service and gain monthly subscribers, kind of like Vale's OnlyFans account.
