Thoughts on Becoming a Selling & Support Captain

I have the option on becoming a Selling & Support Captain & I’m a Mattress Specialist right now. I’m excited about the opportunity. What are anyone’s thoughts about this especially if you are a Selling & Support Captain right now.

@61h You can't step down from a role unless there is an open job to step down into. Also something for OP to consider.

I regret it. The money you get isn't worth it for the amount of cr-p they expect you to do..

If you’re up for the challenge I’d say go for it. Macy’s gets a lot of bad press and they have their share of disgruntled employees, many of which should have left years ago, but it’s actually a good company to work for.they offer competitive pay, competitive benefits, and they They celebrate inclusion and they give almost anyone a chance to move up so long as you are proficient in your role. Just know a retail schedule doesn’t work for everyone. Be prepared to work nights and weekends and expect to multi task much of the time.

Macys used to have a reputable managerial program years ago- and I mean like 2-decades ago. It sounds like you are in a decent store with decent people at this time. And I stress, at this time. Things can change dramatically with a change of leadership. 99% of the time the "captain" position is a dead-end. It is NOT a management position, you will just be doing the work without the paycheck or a manager title- which won't mean anything to anyone if you apply for a management position elsewhere down the road. Going into the 4th quarter, be prepared to work 6 day weeks and 10-hour days. Also, be prepared for pushback from your current level co-workers. While some will be happy for you, others will be passive-aggressive and not listen to you with a "who-does-she/he think they are" attitude and not do as you ask. Other posters have warned you of the true risks, heed their advice. Good luck.

Thanks for all your opinions everyone. I will take that into consideration. It’s just that I’ve been with Macys for over a decade now & I always saw myself as a leader especially as time goes on. I’ve been told that becoming Captain could over time turn into a managerial position which is something I always wanted. The managerial team in my location is not toxic & all great people & they want to see me move up to I think because they are having me help them with managerial tasks from time to time. Time will only tell what occurs but the skies the limit for me.

Unless the predecessor got promoted within a year...dont do it.

More than likely they eyed you because you give results. Theyll abuse you until you're burnt out.

You make more in mattresses and most likely have a better schedule. What attracts you to it? Insurance?

any job with 'captain' 'ambassador' 'lead' 'key holder' is a manger job without the pay. avoid those. especially in retail.

Is it for a back of house or front of house captain job? Back of house captains have it made in my area. We mostly have set schedules Monday to Friday 8am -5 pm

Honestly, it depends on the location and the quality of the leadership team you’ll be working with. It’s not inherently a bad job, but like the commenter below stated, it’s not unusual to find yourself in a position where you can be taken advantage of (especially if the CXMs are incompetent). If you’re interested in moving up and the pay increase is significant enough for your lifestyle, I would suggest at least considering it, but really think about the environment you work in before you decide to pursue it.

Oh honey…. Don’t ever take a job with ‘captain’. In the title, you’ll be doing a managers job without the pay. They’re trying to take advantage of you.
