Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

This is becoming ridiculous

Our team has been so overworked lately that we have completely lost any work/life balance - all we have left is work. I'm having issues dealing with it and I'm in my twenties and single. I can't imagine how my older coworkers with families are handling this. What's going on? Is there a hiring freeze or something?

Then why are they not cut? It seems pretty simple to me. If you don’t do your work or your position is not needed then you are terminated with severance. In the old days a hatchet person was assigned this task and it just happened. This is an insult to those who are doing great work. Then again this situation is not new.

Unfortunately with OXY we still have too many people that honestly need to be cut. They're just living off the fat of the land literally. Prime example is all the busywork touted as "needed reports" generated by corporate people supporting GOM. The number of middle management types with fluff staff is unreal.

Agree with you totally. Since 2015 the company has changed. It was all about delivering results, this new leadership is all about cliche management.

Let’s hope for continued high oil prices to help fund continued operations, capital projects, and new ventures. Oh, and also pay down the debt. View the debt as part of the portfolio that must be ranked alongside the other projects.

Papa B gets paid that sweet coupon payment first, then the C-Suite bonuses have to be allocated for their amazing efforts in completing another successful payment to Papa B and what’s left over goes into the business. So in conclusion, get used to grabbing your ankles and taking that corporate big one because the pain is just commencing buttercup

They’re only hiring those people that will make our workforce more ‘diverse’, not those that are actually qualified and willing to work. So those ‘less diverse’ people are getting overloaded.
Also many of the older workers have left on VSP, so that leaves work for the younger folks who aren’t used to working so hard. The olders handled a ton of work and it may take 3 you gets to replace one older.

I did hear no hiring for a while because we were at our max as for as G&A goes. It has to do more with getting more out of the slackers, or getting rid of them and hiring people that work. I know a few that use the WFH as a way to dodge work, but yet don't want to come into the office, because there they would be under the microscope. There are also many that can WFH and the office and produce, so maybe Oxy needs to stop with all the diversity and equal rights and hire based on ability. Corporations these days are more about making quotas and perception than actual work. It is all deep in HR groups and those folks bring the ideas and spread them throughout the company. It is amazing companies can even turn a profit with all the red tape HR makes them jump through.

You could run like Oxy did from Aberdeen.

Welcome to Oxy! This company is not for those who don’t want to work their tails off to the max. If people can’t stand the workload then they should get out. The company in its prime was full of mostly hard working very experienced people who sacrificed their personal time for the company. Now who knows what you have since they started hiring mainly inexperienced people directly from the university at the BS level. Also most of the experienced people took the VSP.
