Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How much are you disappointed?

Someone wrote that almost no one came to IBM with the intention of staying here, in the sense that it was their dream job here. Well I’m that odd case, I’ve always wanted to be a part of this company, and in return I only got one big disappointment.

IBM is actually the diametric opposite of the image I had of this company. And not just me, but many others. I think that the public image of this company is still much better than the real situation.

Kodak, the inventor of the digital camera, goes bankrupt primarily because it didn't think it worthwhile to aggressively develop its own digital photography equipment.

What’s the “Kodak

I was disappointing the day I was sent to Armonk for training and I saw the ridiculous "health care" plans this company with all this money offered to its US employees. Still, I rode it out. In hindsight, I wish I left years ago. Working on fixing that now though because after a couple of years with no raises or bonuses, yet more More MORE work, a fella burns out :)

I joined IBM in the early 2000's and left 10 years later. I left disillusioned after 1 raise in 10 years, and dealing with comp plans that were designed to pay out as little as possible. And from what I read and hear, it hasn't got any better.
IBM is a mere shell of what it used to be.

@usl+1a80leMz ok got it but it's the same story in dev side.

They always quote "pmr" or some other bs which itself is flawed.

Market pays atleast 30% + on base and if you add stocks it's easily 2x and can even go 3x what ibm pays.

Companies in Midwest states like Tennessee are paying more than ibm at this point.

Thisis the beginning of ibm not able to retain any employees because they declined to increase pay even to adjust for inflation and took away whatever negligible bonuses we got

Interesting. We know why we did this. IBM was starting to get it's head handed to it from the age discrimination lawsuits. IBM's focus on EPH (Early Professional Hire).

Ah the 2018 CBD crisis- when with no notice, they postponed start dates for college hires by up to one year. There were many posts on Reddit about it. The CBD program was rebranded in 2019 as a way to shake off the image.

@ jsy+1a80leMz this wasn’t in development, this was in GBS. The salaries are shockingly low compared to competitors.

The summed up gap for all 3 offers that IBM refused to close was in the range of $200K. I’ve lost a pipeline of $10M this year as a result

The bean counters only see quarter-to-quarter, not into next year. And the icing on the cake is that somebody probably got a bonus for saving the company the expense of the salaries of those three resources.

They need to count all the beans, including the future lack of harvest from the ones they are failing to plant for next season, not just today's red beans.

What was this?

@opt+1a80leMz thanks for saying this.

Market has completely outdated ibms dev salary.

Also, even if it did not cost let's say $10mil the cost for retraining new employees is huge until they become productive.

I’ve lost 3 employees in the past quarter because IBM refused to make a retention offer that adequately met external offers that my employees had. My team had to scale back on what we can sell & deliver as a result. The summed up gap for all 3 offers that IBM refused to close was in the range of $200K. I’ve lost a pipeline of $10M this year as a result of losing these 3 employees. The kicker is none of my employees wanted to leave, but they said they felt like they couldn’t justify continuing working in light of no pay raises and no bonuses for years. I know of at least 4 other teams who were impacted last year by key employee departures. That was when I learned employees mean nothing to leadership. My advice for anyone is to get out of here as soon as possible.

I've worked at places that won't even consider an ex-IBMer. Once - I asked a senior manager why. Her response was that an ex-IBMer's technical experience was more narrow that a country dirt road.
"When I see an extensive IBM work history, I just toss the resume in the garbage", she told me.

Sadly, it's true. Over my years in mainframe, I've actually met "JCL experts" and monthly RCP/CIRATS/"Whatever they call it now" mainframe fix appliers from IBM. All of them now qualify for positions at Walmart or McDonalds.

The public image is definitely changing for the worse and quickly too. After the intern hiring debacle of 2018 IBM’s been barred from recruiting at many college campuses. As the number of ex IBMers grows, their reputation as a poor employer is spreading. Most of my friends who left did so on good terms and even they have nothing positive to say about the company. When is leadership going to wake up...

its just money making machine baby these days... a bit sickly in last 10 years but still makes a truck load of money for the folks at the top of the IBM tree... this is all that matters
