Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM on "Ventilator" Life Support

Poor leadership presence in last 2 weeks. No TV appearances expressing support of 'we are here to help in this time of need'. They are too focused on cost cutting employee salaries thinking that will be the solution to their problem. The whole world shut down and they are trying to squeeze out savings to help EBIT. GM has made money nearly every year since bankruptcy and they are afraid to spend at their own cost to help manufacture solutions. I thought they had a large cash reserve of $20B to prepare for any downturn. Not only did the gov't lose about $11B on the 2009 bailout, but the company now has money on hand that they don't want to quickly use for American lives.

I guess the $14B in stock Buybacks GM has done since bankruptcy didn't amount to much. Think about that. $14B in buy backs that didn't amount to anything along with $11B loss to the gov't from bailout.

GM could have jumped out early to show their care in this time of need.
PR media statements on paper are too late to mean anything. They are all afraid to show their face on TV , even early on and definitely now, because they are not really worried about the people, just the company earnings. Barra will probably be gone after over 40 years with the company. You can't spin General Motors as stepping up to the plate when they never showed their face or concern publicly as coming together as a nation.

Totally blew any future positive publicity showing GM vehicles and the company stepping in to help. Any commercial that GM tries to make them out as helping out with ventilator/mask production is non-impactful and will be almost silly to watch.

Enjoy the show.

I hope that GM did not screw up on the sourcing and manufacturing of the ventilators to where they cause even more deaths than they caused with the poorly designed ignition cylinders. This would put the last nail in the coffin for GM. The negative publicity would destroy them. GM has had a poor track record in starting out with new technology—for example, the first infotainment systems were disasters.

@lunc+14dyse2w I actually own my business for the past 10 years that is very well known across the world, and work for two different firms. Your replies were amazing but now I am bored with you, goodbye.

@lgiq+14dyse2w Thank you for more data validating your low emotional intelligence. Reading your grammar and total composition I would estimate that your a female under 30 in the Democratic party with very entitled and liberal views that represents Mary Barra's base. I truly feel sorry for the way you feel and act.

Great job Mary for inspiring people such as this to amplify your true value.

@kcow+14dyse2w Apparently I hit a nerve! Maybe you should stop skulking around a site for GM employees since you aren’t one anymore. Bye!

@kzxc+14dyse2w You spewed a bunch of garbage with no supporting evidence. It’s not my job to vet your nonsense. Anyone with a brain can see your bitterness for what it is. Maybe you should work on figuring out why you’re still unemployed instead of bashing GM a year after you were let go? Your bitter tears are showing. ;-)

@kbyy+14dyse2w interesting comeback. I agree everyone is entitled to their opinion. Now let us see who is correct and who is wrong. Can you provide information that shows your statement is accurate? Or show us the proof that what you are writing is true.

@jmfq+14dyse2w Lots of falsehoods and misinformation here. You obviously get all of your information from the MAGA propaganda machine. I’ll just say that you’re wayyyy too invested in a company you no longer work for. It’s time for you to move on...we certainly have.

Wow, the comments are just what the CCP and corporate sellouts want. For us to fight with each other. In Plato's book 'The Republic' he said this would happen after Temocracy that we would enter into Tyranny.

There are a lot of emotions happening right now sorry for being part of that.

The truth is that GM is to heavily invested in China, and they gave away our intellectual property for Profit at Any Cost. Now we are in a period of misinformation and propaganda to protect a female CEO that is making mistakes. There are many, but here are the recent truths.

  1. Promised ventilators at a volume and date which she could not achieve
  2. Asked the government for $1B to retool a factory
  3. Took a 1,500 square foot office space put cheap rework tables into hand-build simple machines
  4. Accepted an order for $450M to build 30,000 units and delivered late
  5. Machines don't have more than $500 in parts but equate to $15,000 a unit

I lost my job as an engineer at GM it hurt that is true, but I will come out of this better.

Unfortunately, the truth is GM is a corporate liar funded by a super PAC that is Democratic and has Communist Chinese Party money in it telling them what to do.

When I called my friends at the Pentagon they told me that the reason Detroit is such a hot spot is because the Chinese flew into Canada and drove across the border to business with companies in Detroit during the lockdown. Thank GM for being part of that too.... Maybe that is why this GM propanda stuff is happening, because when the consumer realizes it they won't want the product anymore.

Or engineers currently worried about their job given the status of COVID or the economy? This website is specifically made for lay off discussions during times like this. How about you get off the layoff.com since you are not at all worried or concerned, and go back to scrolling down your e-mail list sitting at home and take your 20% pay cut. (This is for the superstar engineer below)

GM has been on life support for quite sometime. Exiting product markets left and right and is left with a non-competitive family of vehicles. Poor leadership at its worst. Has always treated people as consumable commodities.

To the person that posted “Are you guys even engineers...”. Are YOU?? Ever heard of Build To Print? Do you really think GM is gong to develop and release a ventilator? Wise up. Yes. This can be set in motion in a matter of days.

#Iwork4China feedback. Well if GM is under China's direction there will be layoffs in the US to compensate for lost GM China Profit. If I am wrong there won't be...bet US people lose their jobs for China profit losses.

On a good note, President Trump is about to zap the CEO from 3M for lying about capacity and delivery times hopefully that person gets arrested under the wartime act.

Then poor old Mary Barra is next, even her PR machine won't get her out of this. BTW sorry the stock price will take a hit because of what she did and the workers will have to pay for it too.

Reviewed ventilators purchasing contract at supplier. Absolutely no engineering data on parts all liability goes to vendor. GM SQ has no idea of how to make parts. Talking AIGA, when it is FDA. Supplie Company rejected proposal. Went to Ventecs site they only have 200 units a month capacity. Then opened up exploded part view, very simple design.

Mary could have rented a production building vs retooling plant at request for $1B from government.

Total PR protection campaign for $22m a year female CEO. Hope GM fires her quick and puts a real leader in.

Btw...All you M-o-r-o-n-s on LinkedIn bragging about this with #Iwork for GM, will feel deep shame someday when you realize the truth. Your hashtag should be #Iwork4China.

Life support is an understatement. I saw a post below stating a potential for salaried layoffs after the COVID isolation ends. After conferring with a few close friends who are executive level, I am scared for myself @ the technical fellow level.

Truck sales have been below expectations. Truck team management is indeed under a microscope due to all the recalls. In addition, those whose salary/time at grade is near at or above average may be asked to “retire”. A severance is likely but not as generous as 2018-2019.

My sources are commenting that if one is not directly affecting our future autonomy or electrification there is a great potential for extended layoff or dismissal.

Sweating bullets!

Are you guys even Engineers ?

Takes the company more than 5 years to release a car. How do you expect any company besides the ventilator company to release a ventilator in a few days ?

The last the the world needs right now is more corporate propaganda. If you want to help, go deliver some food to your local food bank.
