There'll be more layoffs, major ones, that's for sure. But I'm willing to bet you anything that none of them will happen before January.

In order to have people off payroll before the beginning of Q2 (the common tactic), the announcements would come within the couple weeks.
The RFI process:
Make an announcement that a group is impacted on a group call.
Upper leadership spends 2 weeks or so grading people's value on a 1-5 scale, most (if not all) of which is based on how they feel about that person. (very biased most times)
The impacted employees are made aware on individual calls.
The impacted employees have 60 days before they are off payroll.
Since the whole process takes little over 75 days, they would need to make the group announcement about 3 months prior to when they want people off payroll (which would likely be the last few weeks of March).
Also heard today that a call is coming this Friday 12-14 about surplus in the MidWest
Our management group has a 3rd and 4th level call this week and individual calls are going out this Fri. 12/14 to everyone in the group, telling them that they have a job or they don't have a job. Mandatory attendance "Warning" conference call occurred weeks ago for everyone in our target group. Target group I'm in is all 2nd level and 3rd level managers with seniority from near to, or far above, 20 years with T. Nearly all of the 3rd levels in the target group were never in a target group in the past decade or more. This time around, they are. Yes, Virginia, there will be an axe falling on some heads soon, and it will certainly be before Christmas. Yes, you may stay on and collect a paycheck into early 2019, but your Christmas is still trashed if you're told on 12/14 you have no T job. Bah humbug. It will all be spread out geographically and in "bite size" chunks for T to try to not trigger a major announcement about it. Same old same old, nothing new to see here folks, move on. 2019 will see the same, then so will 2020... Just do your job well and honestly so you can respect yourself regardless of what happens to your job. Fate is unavoidable, and we all have a 100% mortality rate (at least last time I checked the stat's), but you have to live with yourself every day for the rest of your life.

if you are really trying to say nobody's last day is not before christmas then you probably have not spoken to several thousand people that had their last day a week before christmas not just last year but also 2016, 2015, 2014 .... get a clue dip sh-- - this is not the mom and pop general store.
AT&T has a clever scheme to get rid of a few thousand people every quarter or so and not make any public announcements. It has been going on for years and will go on .. even after 2020. And you can very definitely work yourself out of a job here just for doing everything right
@gue, are you seriously cutting hairs to differentiate between a holiday announcement that you’re gone in February, vs. being physically cut days before Christmas? Then you hide behind a technicality!

The post is right. The layoffs announced later this week will go in effect Feb 2019. Usually, it's a 60 day notice at AT&T. So, it's a little disingenuous to say that any unannounced layoffs are going to occur in December. The announcement might occur in December.

December layoffs happen every year. That said, it's getting later in the year...I see a lot of folks talking about a call Weds 12/12...may be... but folks won't be removed from payroll by end of year. For those stating they have a call Weds, what is your business unit/ organization?

We have a meeting this Wednesday morning as well. AT&T does not care if it is Christmas to lay you off. They will always look at their bottom line.

Fact is yes, cuts will be announced by many organizations including management positions, this week and this has occurred in at least 8 of the last 10 years right before the holidays. Too bad they can't incentivize a little, people would happily leave I'd expect.

Not sure about your logic, but you are correct in your comment. Most of these management types take the last few weeks off so any announcements will be in January. This matches the EOM March as last day on payroll. My expectation is going to be mid January.
I was surplussed last Dec 15 ... as was my co worker a year or 2 before me, on Dec 15 .... so yea not sure they really care about how it looks ... lol.
The "Phone Company" has never been concerned about "bad publicity" shortly before Christmas in past years. What has anyone in management here done that would change that perspective?
