Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Why the push for updating our goals?

My boss has been hounding me and my team about updating our goals in Workday.

Everybody knows that there are no promotions or raises or any rewards, whatsoever, for good work, so the only motivation left is to not get fired in this soft economy. That doesn't take much because Bill Brown doesn't want to pay severance.

So why are we wasting time going through the motions of reviewing goals?

You must not have been around during the McNerney years.. x number of 1s have to be given. Don’t complete your mid year, that’s one less 1 people on your team have to worry about.

@hs I got a three last year and it came with neither a promotion nor extra pay.

Why would I ever put in extra work ever again? It's not like they going to pay me back for sc--wing me over last time.

You don't need to update it. But don't complain if you get a 2 or even a 1. It just gives management a reason not to give you a 3 or 2.

The reason why HR is forcing employees to enter the goals during start of year, and updating during mid years is because they are going to monitor the final year ratings. There's gonna be a big cut in the "exceed expectation" ratings as BB said before that 3M employees get 100 marks.

@OP
All the internal metrics. The supervisors and managers are being measured on what percent of their people get their expectations updated before the deadline. It is at least one of many numbers they must hit. That's why the hounding. The expectation is 100%, of course.

Because the bosses got in trouble in the voice of the employee surveys. It’s heavy CYA.
