Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Monday Schedule

60 PL (WAM) here. I fully expect Monday to be my last day, but nothing is scheduled yet.

Did your Monday schedule change somehow with any "Catch up" or the like meetings?

@hle+1pkfG1ks Kinda hard to pose a physical threat when you are not in office…

I am not a people leader, but have gone through several layoffs, and know first hand how it went with colleagues and friends that were impacted. Generally, meeting requests went out the morning of, with very little notice. Exception is if your manager and you are both onsite at the same location, then they would come over and take you to their offcie or conference room, and you may not get an invite at all - this was prepandemic.

But I think certain groups and depending on your role, may have different risk levels regarding why they want to wait till the last minute. If you were in ops and had elevated privilledges to production systems, then they definitely dont want to give you any heads up. But for majority of folks, this risk is low for many reasons.

In the past I have never heard of anyone impacted getting advance notice through suspicious invites that come in on a Friday, or over the weekend. This is just my experience. and what I have observed. They could do things differently this time, since this is the only major layoff we have had (3000+) while most are WFH.

I got 1:1 invite for Monday morning. I’m fully expecting to be laid off.

At other firms, some much larger than Schwab, no invite was permitted to be sent until the morning of or right before the mandatory layoff meeting. This was to avoid any unnecessary risk. If someone was to get an invite early, they could assume it a layoff meeting (since they are so generic in the title (e.g., catch up meeting). If they “think” they are being laid off, there comes a possibility that they will retaliate including but not limited to posing a physical threat. The key is to keep the unnecessary risk as low as possible. Thus, you don’t want to send invites out any earlier than absolutely needed. I can’t imagine Schwab would want to do things differently.

OP here. I wasn't invited to Wednesday and Thursday "Private Appointment" calls and naturally wasn't part of Weekend HR Consult calls. My peers were. I am guessing consolidation is impending.

I suspect the invites will go out very early Monday.

The meetings in my group are interesting. I'm in one of digital groups that moved into a business line. The svp level MD and two of her three MD's had the meeting. Not one 60 pl has the meeting.

@cjg+1pkfG1ks I have literally not seen a single PL with no invite who isn’t impacted. They either all have very direct reports (<6) or are newly hired. My opinion is that all safe PLs all got the optional HR training (hence it is optional). That said, it is also possible that a lot more people are impacted than I previously thought. Every manager in my department with the exception of two have the weekend trainings.

In the past layoffs, these catch up meetings are pretty sudden, with alo ost no notice. i expect a lot of those to go out on the Monday morning of, local time.

@ocv+1pkfG1ks If none of OP's directs are impacted, then OP would not have been invited to those meetings, so it is not necessarily for certain that OP is affected unless OP's manager got an invite and all other PL's under that manager except OP received an invite. But there will be those who have to "walk out" those on site who are impacted - different person than the "notifier." Those people also got lists on Friday. I don't know if the "walk 'em out folks" were invited to the weekend meetings though. What a "Wurster Sh$t Show."

@nwk+1pkfG1ks Maybe the OP didn’t receive the layoff training meeting on Wednesday and the optional HR meeting over the weekend.
