Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Layoff predictions 2024

I’d bet a red swingline stapler and an expired sas/access license the next round will be the week of 1/28.
What is your guess or inside scoop? Who is next on the chopping block?

Are you

  • - paying internet usage based on number of characters and just trying to save a buck
  • - a really bad communicator who assumes people know what you are talking about.
  • - making sh-t up to stir the pot
  • - ??

Are there more Sales people than Marketing or vice versa?

Check the numbers that roll up to anyone with a C in their title and you can probably say the same thing.

"it would be nice to see all the redundant marketing roles outside of HQ eliminated too."

Go look at the org chart and there are 622 people that roll up to JC. Why on earth does SAS need that many people in Marketing?

I heard from a reliable source that the Australian offices are set to be closed down in 2024.

"Look for an urgent effort to make Viya more compatible. It doesn't have to be 100% compatible -- 80% or 90% would help a lot.

If a vigorous effort is not being made, then the best time to sell a declining asset is ASAP.”

I’m not going to name the product because that would identify me, but in my product the centerpiece procedure was more than 95% compatible with V9 from day one. It can be done. It should have been done more broadly.

The rumors last year were a quiet time until February. So I am guessing things will FIRE up in February.

If an incompatible Viya and a dying V9 is the best future SAS founders can muster, it does not matter when the layoffs happen.

Thought I would never say this but SAS is akin to the car in your driveway. It is a depreciating asset and is worth more today than it will be in the future.

The question has sadly become: can the company lay off fast enough such that salary costs are declining faster than revenue?

March is a good guess. A good number of sales people started leaving in January because their comp is tied to staying till start of year. If enough leave they may not need to make any moves.

It would be interesting to see a move in middle managers and higher.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/20/as-companies-lay-off-even-more-workers-they-could-be-making-a-mistake.html

“ The employees who are staying lose trust in management, and the people that lose trust quickest are the A-players, and they leave, and the B-players become the A-players, but then they leave too, and you are left just with the C-players, and that creates a doom spiral at the company,”

that timing would be my guess also. If nothing else, there will be a layoff and / or VRBP before March 15 when bonuses traditionally pay out.

It would be nice to see lots of middle management jobs eliminated. Lots of directors and VPs. it would be nice to see all the redundant marketing roles outside of HQ eliminated too.

A small number were laid off last week. Pre-sales or customer success. Whatever it's called. At least one in Retail. Not sure about the rest.
