What does a rank of Very Good or Good mean for long term

XOM loves double speak and word games, so can you help translate for me what "Very Good" (VG) and "Good" (G) ranks mean for the long term? My read is that G is not good, but rather not bad (NSI/NI) and VG is essentially the same thing but with sprinkles on top. On the flip side, what exactly is O/OWD in practice?

What do G/VG mean for raises? Is it just enough year to year to keep a cheap employee until he/she quits due to stagnation or can it be reasonable (promotions and raises beating inflation)?

Thx yall

Are rankings "sticky" between years or is each year independent? Does getting poor ratings anchor you for next year or is there a chance to do better if you change roles?

None of these RANKINGS mean anything because you are being replaced by BTC or some other cheap a$$ place!!! Don't even think about it because your days are numbered!

Unless you're NRE and just hanging on for the pension...

Very good = job hunting
Good = aggressively job hunting

Good luck!

As a non manager and and retirement eligible, you are in good shape as “very good” if you are CL 28 or 29. You expect a downward trend the last 3-5 years. If you are a lower CL person or technical being “good” is pretty mediocre and you are not going anywhere.

@gsu+1nNmAYmO options 3 or 4. Everything is "relative" so no way to guarantee a personal win. So much thumb on the scale.

In the current environment, VG is the new excellent. One can have a long career trajectory with promotions with a VG ranking (maintained over time)

OP here: thanks for the feedback. I think it is a sign that there is no future here. I'm going to focus on maximum value extraction to bank skills and training that someone else will appreciate. My PDS feedback made zero sense and directly conflicted with the content of the document itself. This company is screwed up and I look forward to turning and burning.

"Your end with the company has already been decided by HR."

I'd substitute "management" for HR, since the latter is useless and can't / won't decide anything.

Once you are no longer NRE (aka protected), you are fair game.

OP, being ranked good means they are getting you ready for NSI material in the next two to three years. Next year you'll be ranked good or NI unless you fu-k up in which case you'll be NSIed. So, I guess you should have a couple more years of employment with Exxon until the need you to be NSIed because they''ll have run out of NSI candidates and somebody has to be NSIed no matter what. My recommendation is keep riding the wave and collecting your paycheck but start looking for another job right now. Your end with the company has already been decided by HR. Your days are counted and there's nothing you can do about it. Good luck.

It means you are not abbrasive / toxic enough, but still useful as a door mat ....will give you just enough hope that you might get 'outstanding' one day.....oneeeeee...day.

VG and E promote at same time, so you're giving up some money but not as much as G

It means your 1-year contract with the company was renewed and you were not used this year as fodder to justify the rankings of management, sponsored personnel and HiPos. Best of luck next year.

These rank categories are sham and created to benefit those with power to represent others and not vice versa. Has anyone seen a standard definition for any of these rank categories? Nope, you haven't. Why? Because they don't exist. The rank team and HR collectively define these categories every year to fit their agenda. Don't believe me? Ask you rank representer and / or your HR rep and see if they can share it with you. They won't.

Very good is bottom 50% or average. That's it. Long term, it means you're forever out of the running for almost all executive positions except Chief which is low 30 CL requirement. If you ever fall to good, you'll never make it past CL 29.

"Very Good is very good", remember that little nugget.....truth is likely one of the following: 1) your mediocre with some warts that folks don't want to acknowledge , 2) Your plateaued and they want to keep you happy enough that you don't quit, but also not that they have to pay you bonus units, 3) you have limited sponsorship support among the management rank group and no one "went nuclear" for you.... 4) your in a very competitive group and they see you as someone who can take the message and not quit...,
Your vulnerable, and the best opportunities are going to go to others...

You are asking the wrong question.

You should ask yourself:

"why staying at EM long term"????

This is not a company for the long term.
This company is good for:

  1. Hi-Pos
  2. young professionals having babies.
  3. new college graduates that didn't find anything better.
  4. foreigners needing a green card.

If you are not in these categories them there is no upside for staying long term.

Instead, use your years in EM as a stepping stone for your next job. Take lots of training, become an expert in something. Then, take that expertise and offer it to another employer that actually values and rewards experts.

After being ranked in top 1/3 for the first 10 years of my career, I slipped to middle 3rd the next 10 years. In 2020, I received a “Good” rank. By 2021, I was NSI.

During all those years, my performance only improved, but my ranking consistently fell. So too did my morale, it’s a vicious cycle. Unless you have very good friends in high places, the gravitational pull of years with the company cannot be denied nor overcome.

In hindsight: There was so much stupid and unrequited loyalty to my “group” - I should have taken every opportunity to move around the company and build more relationships with others.

The beginning of the end. haven’t you read how messed up this place is? They are as crooked as can be and getting worse daily either you’re trying to bury legitimate posts or you’re not reading what folks are writing.
