Thread regarding 3M layoffs

The company I joined is gone

I’ve been at M3 long enough to remember when we were scrappy, focused, and actually proud of the work we did. We moved fast, took care of each other, and leadership had a clear sense of direction. That’s all faded over the years.

Now it’s just layers of middle management, constant reorgs, and decisions driven by metrics that don’t reflect reality on the ground. Morale’s low, good people keep leaving, and those of us who stay are just trying to hold the line. It's like watching something you once believed in slowly fall apart. Not because it has to, but because no one’s really steering anymore.

I’m still here because I care. But it’s getting harder to recognize the place I joined.

3M has spent 2.2 billion buying back it's stock this year. Next time you hear Bill Brown talking about things cost too much or we can't fix anything , it is not in the budget tell them to get bent. As alw a ys the Executives buy back the stock to boost their own compensation.

Indeed it is!
The old white man in legal affairs took renee Dotson and Shauna Macdougal on the most brazen boondoggle to the uk to attend his daughter’s wedding. On 3M’s money!! Yes that just happened. Renee was stupid enough to paste it all over viva (now deleted) ironically the comments are still there. Look for posts on July 16. She also has another gushing post worth seeing…

Speaking up and reporting a bigot manager who constantly made homophobic comments resulting in a 11 month delay in response from the "ethics department" and what I received as a 360 review of myself. What one thing had to do with the other is beyond me and that leader is now a director. Not only was she immature, mean, and rude, but my puppy is smarter than she is. She peaked as a mean girl in 9th grade and stayed there.

It’s certainly frustrating. At this point management literally would rather lose a $20 million opportunity than win a $1 million one at the same margin. You look at TEBG/Former AdMD…handful of years ago layoff 60% of the lab and shut down all but the “top” NPI programs. Top being a supposed golden or platinum step. As everyone in the lab predicted fast forward a half decade and we have no new products and no new revenues because they placed a very limited number of bets. You can’t do that in R&D unless you get very lucky.

I guess a large chunk of the company did the same thing so we are “challenged” to release 1000 new products as a company. Would have been easier to achieve that if you don’t shutter those thousands of NPIs and laid off the staff associated with them.

@gj
Why is nobody standing up? Simple. Anyone who does gets canned. McNerney started that trend and it seems to be the poisoned mindset most CEOs nowadays possess. Dissent is not tolerated. Questioning isn't even tolerated. Therefore it becomes pointless to do it.

The problem is for some reason that no one wants to stand up. All you hear is quiet quitting and the way I was raised is not an option! What happen to standing up for right or wrong as a person of group.What I hear is no one has a backbone anymore and just wants to lay down. Everybody has an opportunity to make a difference one way or another! I don’t know why no one is standing up for the right thing.

@cz hang in there. 55 is a big age for pensions. VARYS can confirm. Too bad you won't get to the magical 91 or 92 number for retiree medical, but this place has been on a crash and burn for 25 years (no) thanks to Jimbo Mcnerney who broke 3M and then Boeing and is probably belongs to the same yacht club in Florida as BB.

I am staying as I am near 55. Just quiet quit mentally. Let those with LTI options work harder.

You can find a job where you're appreciated! Network outside of 3M and focus on your experience -- don't just apply to a bunch of random jobs. If you're going to care, work for a company that values you.
