Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Jun layoffs wtf is going on?

They laid off people holding the project together and kept the ship afloat. It's funny how none of the senior leaders are not getting laid off but people doing the actual work are. They have been hiring massively .. there are 5000+ opening in Optum currently, 1000+ IT roles, so it's not a budget issue... It almost seems like being smart and good at what you do and bending to your managers will is seen as a weakness..the most arrogant Karens and Kens that push back at everything are the only one surviving in this burning he-l. Better start worshipping Satan if you want to survive the coming rounds.

@rv
After recent layoffs end of June, have you noticed your job that was so called was eliminated is NOW listed for looking for hires? So was the layoffs a cover up?

@g9 100% Never hurts to be prepare with an updated CV and portfolio (if needed). It makes the sting a bit less and easier to get your name out there.

Getting RIFed from UHC Tech was the best thing that happened to me as well. Found a job, we have a vastly better industry standards tech stack unlike the sh---y propritety optum tech infesting UHG. Plus I managed to negotiate a 20% raise, their target bonus is much better and 6% match. So folks don't lose hope. Take a month off to prepare and apply for jobs using AI and you'll find something better, preferably in a non medical industry.

People that push back at every request, make a big deal out of every little change and ask for weeks of time for any small IT request citing their backlog is full and create bottleneck for others are the ones that survive this game of musical chair. Hardwork, quick turnaround, working late etc is seen as a sign or weakness and/or as a threat by the lazy managers and directors as they need to stretch the project timeline out to look busy and get more funding. As simple as that. This is exactly why I quit my current team and moved internally hoping this will get better..but nope. It's actually worse now.

Optum is such a cesspool. It drains your spirit and thinks that there are no better options out there. Leaving was the best thing that has happened to my career.

@cf lmao. Our director had a contractor build a chat bot so he can get the credit. It was built and demoed. Using some fake data. Most useless thing. Answered things I can already search using copilot. Guess what... that a few months ago and no updates, no mention of it anywhere..all the drama before the YIR so they can get their 10x bonus. I don't even think this person understands what AI is because he says nonsense all the time after reading Internet articles.

Need to supersize this post and comments! Leadership, HR and Legal Team here are a barrel full of psychopaths and sociopaths indeed. They knowingly and purposefully do things that they know cause harm to employees and even to providers, and of course they couldn’t care less what happens to people. As long as they keep their jobs and paychecks at the expense of employees. May justice be served one of these days. Evil.

@bg Yes, and these heartless, ruthless psychopaths and sociopaths aren’t just in leadership. There are so many in HR and Legal here. Downright evil people. If you are harassed and make the mistake of raising an issue about it they will protect the bully and kick you out, hoping you end your homeless, etc. This is the most disgustingly company I had the unfortunate “privilege” of working for. Nasty to the core. Thankfully I’m out now.

If you want to keep your job, you have to build some useless chatbot and show your respect to the 3b the company has spent on AI tokens. Most leaders will leave the company once the stock recovers a bit and they will take their loot and disappear

@b9 You don't have to be a bad person to start in HR but you definately loose your morals the longer you stay in that role. HR is to protect the company not the employee. Any compaint you make as a worker potentially gets you on a list and out the door.

I got laid off from Optum last week, and honestly it’s been hard to make sense of what’s going on. It feels like teams are being trimmed down even when the work is still there, and a lot of the roles getting cut are the ones actually keeping things running day to day. At the same time, you see more work being pushed offshore or handed to vendors, and more talk about AI tools taking over parts of the job. From the inside, it doesn’t feel like isolated layoffs anymore—it feels like a steady shift in how the whole workforce is being rebuilt, and nobody really knows who’s next.

Before joining this company full-time I never realized how unapologetically evil people would be. There are some truly heartless, soulless people out there in leadership.

Though my experience is a bit different. People who push back tend to do so because they're trying to do what is right and fighting against the irrational decisions made by upper-management/leaders. The people who truly survive here are those who kowtow to every decision from above.

At the end of the day, most decisions made within this company and UHG as a whole are done to personally benefit a leader's positions. Not to benefit the customers or our employees. They will frame it as such but anyone who knows their sh-t knows the truth.

You have to be a psychopath to work in HR at any company, especially UHG.

This is exactly the problem. The toxic mgrs, sr mgrs, directors, etc layoff all employees and keep each other. Yet these losers aren’t doing any work and are collecting large paychecks, so laying off for “financial reasons” is BS! Layoff these toxic tricks and you can keep at least 2 employees for each one you layoff. This is the stupidest and worst HR. Not sure why they have no oversight when it comes to this.
