Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Lay-off policy

Employees at Oxy should be glad that company lay-off policy is based on skills and performance and not like the current blanket federal worker policy that seems to target those who just hired on. To my knowledge for professional hires at Oxy there is no such thing as a probationary status for new hires. But please correct this statement if that is not true.

I agree with Einstein. No, the other Einstein.

@fx+1jma3fe6q, I take it you were laid off. Kind of negates everything you said, doesn’t it?

There is only one person in the country that needs to be laid off. Guess who that is? I'll give you a clue. He lives in Washington and his initials are DT.

Keep dreaming... HR is the company's executive execution squad....They are untouchable in the 40 years I've worked. Good luck changing that...

Agree with Einstein, Oxy has an over bloated and ‘permanent’ HR.
Need a chainsaw to cut that waste out. HR should
be laid off like everyone else.

@sx+1, if you were right about that then the support functions would get laid off, but they don’t. So, you must be wrong, Einstein.

So many little einsteins...When technical folks are laidoff during downturns, HR staff never get laid off. Company downsizing = Technical Staff Reduction = Support Staff Reduction Less Employees mean less support staff needed.
Simple, little einsteins.

Technical functions are indeed needed during a downturn. Who do think keeps the reserves up and the oil flowing even in the absence of drilling new wells. Also, in a divestiture situation who do think does the technical work to put a dollar value on what we are selling. Facility expansions still have to be done to enhance fluid handling where it makes sense. Corrosion doesn’t just go away because oil prices are lower so that requires maintenance efforts. Planning doesn’t stop just because we are not drilling wells.

Makes sense. The support functions are need to pay bills, renegotiate contracts, continue payroll and benefits for those who remain, and maintain IT systems. The technical functions don’t have a purpose in a downturn.

Rigs are dropped, so those associated with feed the rigs aren’t needed. Everyone else stays to keep the ship afloat, develop those who weren’t let go, and to be ready to staff up when the rigs are needed again. Seems simple enough, Einstein.

the people who find and produce the oil and gas get laid off not the extras in hr, that’s the irony einstein

Why is that an irony? Managers decide who gets laid off, not HR.

OP is ignorant, and not an industry or Oxy veteran. Layoffs are not based on skills or
performance. They are based on how much you play politics at the company or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most often the best people are laid off, not the ones who need to be. Also, if you have noticed, HR staff never gets laid off, an
irony.

Comparison doesn’t imply that align together. Maybe that is the confusion. Sorry. They don’t compare favorably.

No, The OIl Biz at least sits down with you and a formal review is taken. You are given opportunities to improve before they send you a** out the door. There is no comparison to the real world and the what is happening in Musk world...

I think that was the point. You are lucky they don’t use the Stalinist approach in this industry. So yes the oil industry can be compared to the federal government now.

My 40 years in the business, there has always been an understanding that you were on probation until your first appraisal. Can't compare the oil industry to the Stalinist approach this administration is undertaking....
