Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Terrible working conditions

I came here recently. I didn't have high expectations, but I didn't think it would be this bad. Is this now the worst UP has ever been or have there been worse periods before?

If I could make the same amount of money working as a budtender or a ganja gardener in a legal state I think I would do it

The best advice I can give you is quit. If you are this unhappy find somewhere you want to work. Nobody is forcing you to stay in your present job.

@4tzu+1h74hi0r. If would drink/smoke, then the job wouldn't be that bad, but we can't.

Hey Old Head,
You had a railroad to retire from.
We won't.
Have a U. P. quality day....

Mythical over paid?? I just come to work and earn my pay without complaining. You applied and were hired and now your crying crocodile tears because your feelings are hurt by having to earn your pay. Either quit and find a job you like or shut up and do the job that you applied to do. It’s pretty sickening to see fng’s hire out and then start whining. No job is perfect. They call it work for a reason. Put your big boy pants on and go to work.

I wasn't around when you could drink or do coke or smoke on duty of course I would think that all the self medication was done with moderation. But I wonder if maybe one day the jobs will allow the use of better living through chemistry. As it is when I'm off duty I use alot of cbd and delta 8 to try and recover from all the stress from working. Believe me it does help .

Old head does make a point. I remember the modules as they were called. Stayed in those dilapidated things instead of a hotel. Also before bottled water the water cans were rarely cleaned. But what also happened at that time was almost every trip a case of beer was carried on the train along with flasks so the water can and wether it was sanitary or not wasnt always worried about. As long we got done what needed done the managers left us alone for the most part too. The other part is we made a lot more money back then.

@old head, if you're an active employee as you say, then you're one of those almost "mythical over paid" employees that gets 10 thousand a half just for being alive.

If it’s so bad, why are you still working for UP? If you are truly that unhappy, for your own sake, find another job. Thinks are not going to change for the better here.

You guys have no idea! We had zero locomotives with air conditioning and now you guys would cry if you didn’t have A/C. We didn’t have bottled water, we had a container we filled before the trip started. (You didn’t dare look in there or you never would have drank it) Our railroad hotel rooms didn’t have a TV or even a bathroom. The hotel was inside the rail yard. You went to the end of the hall to a shared bathroom. Yes guys it’s been worse. You just have no idea. It’s way better now.

My apologies to conductor, did not mean to compare the SP to up. I was just trying to answer the question if it was ever like this before. Thank you for sharing, we need any and all gray beards to pass on their knowledge.

In 30 years it has never been worse and it's not even a debate. Also, never compare the SP to the UP its ignorant and absurd!!

My dad told me in late 80’s Philip Anschutz owned SP and he hired some hot shot exec who implemented “deferred maintenance” to increase SP profits. It sounds like it was very similar to PSR. He said things got real bad at SP, then there was rumors of SP merging w/ another railroad, some legal objections happened, then by the late 90’s UP merged (absorbed) SP. Pops sez budgets got increased after the merger, more people were hired, etc. Dunno if history will repeat itself or not. Maybe there is an oldhead on here who remembers what happened and can explain it better than me?

One of our leaders on Company website briefly praised our efforts during these rough times in a round about way. Also if you have any family or friends interested in a career at the Railroad have them apply for a referral bonus. As always no mention of well deserved raises or time off. I just love seeing all the share holders taking our pay raises and then company gaslights workers by announcements of how we are overpaid and have the greatest healthcare in the country. What a crock. They don’t deserve to have any of my family or friends as employees.

It’s been worse. It has gotten better recently. I work in the mechanical department. There’s better ways to make a living, but in my opinion its gotten better.

In the last 20 years it has been worse! Leave this job to us lifers who have too much time invested to quit. I hear Amazon's evil, but theres gotta be somethin out there better. Good luck, kid!

@fmk why are you attacking the poster? Good grief the manager trolls on this site attacking posts & comments is ridiculous. Govt oversight committees are having to start investigations about how this company is mismanaged and yet you come here and say the employees are at fault for giving their viewpoint? This employee has insight of some of the things that need to be fixed at UP. You need to be asking the poster questions and working to make this a better company. Your arm chair attempts at psycho analytical assumptions arent helping to make anything better.

Why would you take a job somewhere that you have low expectations? In this job market there are so many options. Your posting says as much about you as it does about UP.
