Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Working at Broadcom video contains many red flags, let's take a look.

Broadcom recently posted a video titled "Working at Broadcom", featuring what employees like the most. If you haven't seen it, watch it then come back to read the rest. I'll wait. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/broadcomsoftware_working-at-broadcom-the-flexibility-activity-7003387353788481537-MmwD

Okay, seen it? If you are a multi-billion dollar organization with a huge marketing team, promoting what it is like to work for them, and this is the best they can come up with, then just wow. Red flags. There are actually many more videos like this on their LinkedIn page.

This is what I heard:

  1. Broadcom pays really well
  2. Everyone is really talented, intelligent, driven, and will pull you out of your comfort zone even when you don't want to (this is literally what she said)

The last one made me sp-t out my morning coffee. He says the best thing is the flexibility! Why, because "We can work all together, so if we need help we can go to anyone in engineering or management" - So.... you mean we're all stuck in the office together? That is very flexible (for Broadcom)

Let's break this down. They pay really well, probably because of long hours and they don't allow remote working like the rest of the industry. Then they go on to talk about everyone else, and how talented they are. I don't give a flying F*** about that. Then the flexibility of being stuck in an office all together, which makes it easy to ask someone a question. Holy sh-t, perhaps that also saves them on Zoom, Slack and Teams licenses.

I have worked at VMware for over 10 years. That's right, one of the long haulers. I am signing my offer letter for a new role at another company today. This video was the last nudge I needed.

Remote remains a question. 14 years as remote, no team members in town, but have a VMware office 30 min away. I have zero reason to sit in a office with no co-workers. Grrrr

While they might not seem the most enthusiastic rest assured the engineers in those videos are L6+ probably easily banking 500k/year.

Good pay / compensation ? Whats the fun in working 60 hours a week (50% more) for a mere 10-20% TC raise ?
I am happy to have less TC for better wlb. I have friends in broadcom and have heard horror stories of working there.
Like going to office even peak during covid was mandatory. Daily long hours in office at desk. Friday night customer calls etc. 996 culture ?

"...a huge marketing team..." You haven't been paying attention to previous discussions of the lean Broadcom structure.

Congrats on the new role. I have already left VMware, but I remember the culture having a good work/life balance with EPIC days off, unlimited PTO (in America) and extra perks like Wellness allowance. If that goes away, then all that will be left is a ghost of what once was. A ghost ship, crewed by corporate drones and people that are dead inside. I feel sorry for them.

The people in this video are clearly brain-washed by corporate. They don't have a life outside of work, so their high pay and inflexible work/life balance are acceptable to them.

It's not just about being 'stuck' in the office, but their sales roles who travel end up working an enormous number of hours, perhaps up to 70 hours a week. That's a nope from me.

Don’t forget validation of in office attendance with badge swipes!

Love it!

Can we get a big metal punch clock instead of badges?
