Thread regarding Fannie Mae layoffs

Where are lay offs for the Managers and Directors

This place is such a joke! They continue with the nonsense of making certain teams come into the office and they need people to cover when someone calls in or doesn’t show up! You have Directors and Managers that have no clue what they are doing. But if you are a favorite it’s ok let’s put the burden on someone else. When are they finally going to wake up and get rid of some of these people. Be a people manager for once and all. Why does HR allow this?

Yes. Now they have more layers, and more management headcount at each layer. It wasn't like that, and it is going against the entire industry's trend of flattened org structure. Oh, they have now many Chief Officers.

@4w5
Why did they change the titles? To help with retention?

Have they changed the job titles at Fannie? When I was there 10+ years ago they didn't have Senior Manager, Senior Director, etc. Based on LinkedIn, it seems there are way more people with the Manager and Director title now.

Same here. The senior managers above my immediate supervisors lack the necessary knowledge, yet continue to receive their salaries. It would be entirely appropriate to consider releasing them and hiring competent individual contributors in their place. They were promoted for speaking confidently without substance, endorsed by equally uninformed individuals who nonetheless believe they’re competent.

@OP software industry has moved away from bureaucratic hierarchy. They have been replaced with more doers. Fannie is still living in stone age. It seems the shift is inevitable.

@OP many layers of and a huge # of middle managers are a classic indicator of bureaucracy. Not fixed yet.
