Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Product org here is just full of mediocrity

Everyone is obsessed with updating JIRA and making epics/ tickets but no actual strategy or direction.

Just paper pushing/ admin work to make it look like some work is being done but nothing is actually happening

@zr+1jnhaer7q Or my personal favorite closed “due to weather” with a root cause of “weather”. Code for we don’t have a clue or even care so we are closing the ticket.

@100+1jnhaer7q It is a project management tool that some teams are using. It is akin to Microsoft Project. Jira is from software company called Atlassian.
You know how it goes we swap software tools like we rotate managers, they all have pros and cons But all suffer from garbage in garbage out, which is the challenge for all Ford PM. One dude opens a Jira ticket whenever he wipes, another dude only puts in tickets for actual work. Dude one is rewarded based on volume so everyone starts recording every time they wipe.

What in the world is "jira"?? I work in PD and never heard of this.

Sounds like another acronym-based solution to something we didnt need.

@jr+1jnhaer7q do they have the auto-close tickets? those are so fun. "no action on this ticket so it has been automatically closed so our metrics don't look bad." but... that is not the point of tickets.

@gd+1jnhaer7q

Basically....yes

As the jira admin on my team, I'm supposed to push people to open cards to move projects along. Meet the timelines, mind the OKRs

The reality is, we just put in the cr-p that will keep the obsessive compulsive LL6 off our backs so we can actually be productive.

The problem with Jira is the LLs only care about the work that gets reported up the food chain and not the work that is done to keep these antiquated processes flowing.

@jr Correct they are measuring the wrong thing.

In terms of coding lets say

  • coder #1 writes and tests a routine carefully and it works correctly So his git count is 1
  • coder #2 slaps together a routine that is buggy as heck and has to be modified 50 times due to reported bugs. His git count is 50.

The incompetent manager rewards the coder with count of 50 as being more productive.

Same thing happens where employee #1 permanently fixes a problem when reported the first time, vs employee #2 who does a temporary manual fix every time a problem is reported ensuring a reoccurring problem and high # of “resolved” tickets.

this dum--ss confused git commits (quanity) with valued output (quality)
literally the point of this thread regarding jira tickets...

you obviously cannot relate so you have no equity in this discussion. if you can't relate and you are speaking with authority then you are either insecure or just d-mb. so which one are you committing to? it doesn't matter if you're young or not. it matters if you are outperforming everyone around you or not. sounds like you aren't because you feel everyone around you is on par.

Most of these people gets pushed into doing so much they don’t have time or ever look at jira so what usually happens is the task gets sniped by a low hanging fruit

It’s true, it’s actually a modern trade, they prey on talent and are protected by the state in aims to provide extraordinary talent to the automotive workforce. They limit the options of the potential candidates they select far in advance. There are public orgs you can find websites talking about how this is a state wide initiative to retain talent. It’s a big issue in this state and people prefer to look away because so many people are involved in some way on another and toes would be stepped on for looking closer. The internet is free. They limit competition so you are cattled in for your intellect and exploited. It is absolutely disgraceful to disrespect those who have extraordinary or unique skill sets and to subject them to “feeling important”. I would recommend you watch the Ted talk on “dangers of a single story” and learn more about this world we live in

The Product Org that was Peter Stern’s is an absolute joke. It’s one layer of an expensive onion no one can stand. How many billions for blue cruise? Then it not only has a product team, but a business group, marketing, engineering, and several other support teams. It makes no money. The entire product org is a should be gutted, their leader has been at the helm for years and it’s just pals promoting and hiring pals.

I have 1 more year to give this org and I am out.

Do not work at Ford, it’s a joke. You can find way more meaningful work outside of autos to be frank.

Sinking ships won’t get you far.

Hi, I want to say something to everyone reading this in hopes to draw attention to the person who would “like to know” where the individual under them is currently. I want you to pay very close attention to their comment and what incited this individual to say that. This is no random or anonymous comment. This is a serious issue that is plaguing our country. I am personally stating that under Model-E, there was a OSINT OP done on me and they threatened me and leveraged my fear to continue delivering quietly. They try to find dirt on you. The thing is, they think they have dirt, but thankfully are misinformed. They try to basically turn into your handlers. This is a curse to this country. These people are ki-ling competition because they are weak. Be safe and screenshot if this gets deleted . Bless you all.

What did you get done this week?

Are you sure a new grad can’t wash you and take your job? Noob mad because he can’t compete so he thinks everyone is as slow as him.

I bet 10x the post you responded to belongs to someone who could do you your job during his preteens.

Good yard

Damn just had the realization that ford friends and family wants us to fight amongst ourselves instead of pointing the fingers at them. Much like the ruling class. AINT THAT SOMETHING!

But yeah model e is run by fail sons from the LL5 level up.

i respect this dudes crusade cracks me up, wish i knew where he was
havent seen anything like that in the real engineering teams
there actually is motivating work being done and if youre not its likely a skill issue
it would be pretty on brand for a new grad to feel important about their lil component tho
lumping model e into anything remotely homogenous and not 6 different gots is funny

Model e is built off unpaid labor and exploitation of entrepreneurial talent in Michigan that was blackballed and forced to join under backdoor dealings. Model e is full of toxic thieves that take and take or should I say steal

I recommend a move to Model e. The work here is inspiring and will keep you engaged. No use in staying somewhere in Ford that does not motivate you. That is not ideal for anyone or the company.

@dz+1jnhaer7q Truth management sets the rules, then the FnF crowd sets about finding the loopholes and exploiting the system. Years back the primary oncall person received 8 hours OT for the week they were oncall. Some weeks you worked much more than 8 extra hours when oncall, sometimes less. Only the skilled individuals were allowed to be oncall. Then the FnF started complaining that it wasn’t fair that they didn’t get the 8 hours OT, so the OT was eliminated. Suddenly the skilled GSR just stopped answering pages when they were oncall. The FnF LL6 was getting called at aLL hours and had to try to find someone to fix problems. The policy changed to you received 2 hours OT for each phone call and everyone got a turn for oncall. Guess what happened, the FnF crowd set up a system where they were called multiple times a day and had to call their FnF buddies for assistance for the fake issues. These schemers doubled their take home pay and management looks the other way. Whistleblowers end up on layoff lists.

Same thing happening with false tickets to make people appear to be productive.

As a PM, most of us don't enjoy this any more than you do. We'd much rather work on solving customer problems. Unfortunately (or, I guess, for better or for worse), all this tracking and planning is mandated from above.

Absolutely. JIRA trolls are the worst. Daily stand ups. "Planning Poker" are you kidding me? Just get the he-l outta my way and let me work. No, I don't have time to meet with the Scrum master. Go find the gate keeper and leave me alone. Nerds.
