@a7 obviously the higher you go, the more chances to get laid off, especially if you don't really qualify, which seem to happen more often than we realize. An open question is if it's worth the risk. It may depend on your risk tolerance and how far your retirement is.

@a7 you’re right many were unqualified and put into those positions because they were good brown nosers. Instead of going through the proper hiring process this was the result. Sorry but I have very little remorse for those at that level. Most were making life changing salaries and bonuses and several are incompetent.

A lot of these VP's or Directors could have stayed as individual contributors, but were encouraged, sometimes pushed to grow and step up. Many quality leaders were let go because of the coat reduction pressures and now individual contributors are asked to lead without any management oversight. You really never know which position / role could keep you safe.
