Thread regarding PepsiCo Inc. (Pepsi) layoffs

PepsiCo Corn Syrup vs Coke's Cane Sugar

We just heard at the town hall that Ramon and PepsiCo will not be moving to Cane Sugar because....I quote "Producing Corn Syrup is cheaper over Cane Sugar" Another example of $$ over health.

Even when asked by Trump to remove Corn Syrup. Coke is making the move. PepsiCo (at this time) will not.

So how is that cane sugar working for Coke? They just announced 5 plants closing and 3000 getting axed? We will continue to flounder as long as we sell sugar water and unhealthy snacks! I will continue to buy Wegmans, Publix & Dollar General store brands as they are just as good and a better price with full bags!!

@f5 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/16/us/politics/trump-coca-cola-cane-sugar.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Here’s the headline:Trump Says Coca-Cola Agreed to Use Real Sugar in U.S. But Coca-Cola Refuses to Confirm.

Here’s another: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/17/trump-coca-cola-cane-sugar-corn-syrup

Headline: Coca-Cola defends corn syrup after Trump claims he struck cane sugar deal
Quote: The Coca-Cola company has defended its use of corn syrup after Donald Trump’s claim Wednesday that he had apparently convinced the brand to switch to using sugar cane in its US drinks, as it does in Mexico and the UK

Initially, the drinks giant responded with a neutral statement of appreciation for “President Trump’s enthusiasm” for Coke, and a vague message about “new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range” to come.

On Thursday, however, the soft drinks company released an additional statement making positive claims about high-fructose corn syrup, a product that some blame for soaring US obesity rates and which has become a target of health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s “Make America healthy again” movement.

Headline: Coca Cola dodges after Trump says soda will switch back to cane sugar.

It remains unclear whether Coca-Cola agreed to Trump's proposal or whether the beloved soda will still be made with corn syrup.

I think of Pepsi and I think of the 1980s, maybe 1990s. I haven't had a Pepsi since they reformulated Diet Pepsi years ago and gave it that nasty metallic taste, it was like you were drinking a can of metal. That didn't last long and they reverted back to the original formula. Must have been the same Pepsico geniuses that also repackaged Tropicana to it looked like Government surplus OJ, but still charging a premium price. That lasted exactly six weeks. Tropicana sales literally went off a cliff. I never saw PEP move so fast and bring back the original packaging 8 weeks and $50 million later. But in both cases, the damage was done, they drove away a lot of the consumer base that supported these products. Indra had some lame excuse, "well if you don't make mistakes, you don't learn" ....please, with the money she was paid, you don't make basic Business 101 mistakes like that.

@ae hmm...the tariffs have done more damage than that. We need to evolve.

@ae Maybe the farmers could use the corn capacity to increase producion of biofuel instead of corn syrup.

@a8 the shift to cane will hurt American corn farmers. That has nothing to do with health, but it is a fact

Regardless of the science of the makeup of corn syrup vs cane sugar as Ramon mentioned, corn syrup is highly processed and consumers are trying to move away highly processed foods. Seed oils are also highly processed and Frito-Lay still doesn't have an alternative to seed oils in the market.

So, if Coke manages to sell Cane Sugar Coke for equal $ to Corn Syrup Pepsi, what would that say about Ramon, and how he's managed the company... 🤔
