Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Searching for my next job

I am looking for my next job. I have 23 of work experience and of that 17 in Imperial Oil. I am getting offers from other companies, but salary difference is confusing me. Looks like Imperial’s salary was not too too low. I am just asking for matching my salary, and even that is proving difficult. By the way, I am a technical individual-contributor. Any one else facing similar thing or is it just me??

I think if you are ambitious/above average performer you will make up the difference (and much more!) in the bonuses and other perks but if you are below average then it might be difficult to match Imperial. But in the end you just need to consider if there is much future with the company and whether you want to live in Edmonton.

Take the job. You will recoup the difference in the near term, given Imperial will be stagnant for a while and your opportunities are bigger elsewhere

Move to the USA. Canadian salaries su-k. Job market is cr-p and uncompetitive with all the Indians they are flooding the job market with.

@gq The companies I’ve interviewed with do performance reviews, but you are assigned a category (ex; meets expectations, exceeds expectations, etc) and there’s no forced # of people in each category. Their raises and bonuses are multipliers of what their assessment was. Promotions are made through internal job postings and applications, so yes, the best candidate or most-favoured team member still gets picked for a manager position. I don’t think you’ll ever get away from that.

@br with bonuses that simply isn't true. The benefits can be better as well.

@g9 Once again, to suggest "No" force distribution is a myth or Kool-Aid, normally believed by those who never have bad performance review/ranking, until bad review hits them in the head.

May I ask with a salary budget, who get what raise ? or when there is need for RIF, who get the pink slip ? Someone will be assigned the "right" performance ranking.

@ew Yes, other companies will have some form of ranking system. However, most have done away with forced distribution on their rankings. So, if no one is NSI, then no one gets forced into NSI, for example. That does away with a huge amount of stress associated with ranking.

@eq To say no ranking system in other companies is a complete joke. Last time I check, company needs to find a way to decide who get promoted and who get a bigger raise, do you think company just roll a dice to determine that ? The best you can say is someone else's performance review system may be better...

20 yrs individual contributor technical here- I have found the same, most jobs are offering 60-75% of what I’m making. That said, many have other benefits like remote/hybrid work and no ranking system.

Similar experience, and yes, it can be more of a challenge moving from a technical/individual contributor role.

Definitely make sure you consider total compensation. Many other companies offer relatively lower base salaries, but much more upside for variable compensation like bonuses. IOL's pension is quite good, but the other benefits aren't great.

Make sure you consider other factors like mental health, work life balance, and progression opportunities. Promotion opportunities are pretty much non-existent now at IOL with the downsizing, so you may have a lot more opportunity to move upwards at another company.

Other companies have annual bonuses and RSUs that are outside of the salary amount. Try looking at it from the total compensation perspective.

Most people at IOL are overpaid. You’ll have to take a pay cut. But it’s not all about money.

Try a company like TC Energy - they are quite competitive.

As someone outside the company, but worked here as a student and later as an employee - Imperial salaries are unmatched, closed only by Shell. Every other company would offer less.

Choice is yours - take less and be content or stay but miserable.

It is definitely going to be less and without all the benefits.

Salary is going to be around 30% less than what you make working for an Owner company (Imperial, Suncor, CNRL, Cenovous). and if it wat less working for the government.

But that is life, so choose your best offer and move on.

When I added my base salary, DB pension and other benefits, I found it hard to get a matching package outside Imperial. But I couldn't take the mental stress any more.
