It's called pattern recognition, and joyful reenactment of sharing stories with those that simply don't know. Some are new to this and still have yet to figure it out. Others know exactly how the system operates.
The real question is why are coordinated layoffs really a surprise to anyone at GM?
The best education given to me back when I started at GM was to always have layoff fund. It's never a matter of if, only when. I know for certain that many people haven't heard of this, so when layoff time comes rolling around and they find themselves suddenly on that chopping block, it always results in the same reaction of shock.
No one likes seeing people lose their job, but there are people that have been through it enough to see the patterns, and know how to help mitigate the affects.

Twenty year GM vet, I lived through every layoff during that time, and even called out Rick Wagner when he stated we WILL NOT BE GOING BANKRUPT, standing on the second floor of the podium/VEC tower. Barra was a mere HR lead at the time, a no-one. I said we'll be bankrupt in six months. I was wrong, it was nine.

Chill bud. Think the OP is just saying what happened today is unfortunate and for those that were impacted, hopefully they were in an ok place financially so they have a cushion and can recover.
